3 takeaways as Wembanyama scores 39 to fend off Wolves, Edwards

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Joan Beringer (19) is blocked by San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) as he drives to the basket during the second half of an NBA basketball game in San Antonio, Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026.
Victor Wembanyama scored 20 of his 39 points in the second quarter, De’Aaron Fox had 25 points and 12 assists, and the Spurs held on for a 126-123 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves and red-hot Anthony Edwards on Saturday night.
Edwards pumped in 26 of his career-high 55 points in the fourth quarter, but Wembanyama tallied 12 of his own in the period to help the Spurs win their second straight.
After blowing a 19-point lead in losing 104-103 at Minnesota last Sunday, the Spurs knew that the 25-point halftime lead they built this time around probably wasn’t big enough.
Still, they came out at the start of the third quarter “way too nonchalant,” coach Mitch Johnson said.
“And this team has done this to us enough times that everyone remembers and can expect it,” he added.
A 3 by Donte DiVincenzo gave Minnesota a 119-118 lead with 1:47 left, but Wembanyama answered with a 20-footer before Keldon Johnson sank a 3 with 17.3 seconds left to give the Spurs a 123-119 lead.
Edwards cut it to 123-122 with a 3 with 11.8 seconds left, but Fox hit a pair of free throws with 9 seconds left.
After Wembanyama hit a free throw to account for the final score with 1.3 ticks left, Edwards had a chance to force overtime but his heave from beyond halfcourt missed the mark.
Sparked by Wembanyama, the Spurs scored 48 points in the second quarter for their highest-scoring period since 1987 and the fourth highest in a quarter in franchise history.
The 20 points were the most Wembanyama has scored in any quarter of his career.
Wembanyama logged 10 minutes in the second quarter, hitting 5 of 8 from the floor, 3 of 5 from 3-point range and 7 of 8 from the foul line to help the Spurs carry a 69-44 lead into halftime. He scored 12 points in the final 2:37 of the half, including 11 straight in a span of two minutes.
In 31 total minutes, the most he’s played since Nov. 14, he also had nine rebounds and two blocks and made a season-high 11 free throws on 14 attempts.
Minnesota outscored the Spurs 40-27 in the third quarter to pull within 96-84 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Keldon Johnson finished with 20 point to help the Spurs improve to 29-13. The Timberwolves, who played without Rudy Gobert (hip), fell to 27-16.
Here are three takeaways as the Spurs prepare to face Utah on Monday in the final game of this three-game homestand:
1. Wembanyama’s clutch play saved the day again
A week after he refused to let the Spurs lose in Boston, Wembanyama came up big again in crunch time.
In the final minute this time, he hit a 20-foot jumper to give the Spurs the lead for good at 120-119, blocked fellow Frenchman Joan Beringer’s reverse layup with 13 seconds left and had a crucial offensive rebound in the final seconds.
“Vic has proven in his young career that he embraces those moments and wants the basketball and is looking for opportunities,” Mitch Johnson said.
2. Edwards saves his best for the Spurs
Last Sunday in Minneapolis, Edwards’s 3-foot runner with 16.8 seconds left handed the Timberwolves a 104-103 win.
As an encore, he pumped in a career-high 55 points.
So what is it about the Spurs that brings out the best in him?
“They have Wemby,” he said with a smile.
“I definitely appreciate (him) for being honest,” Wembanyama said. “I think it’s a real power to have the strength to be honest about things. He’s not backing away from the question.”
Great players make for great rivalries. The Ant-Wemby battles should be fun to watch for years to come.

3. Coach’s state of the team nails it
The Spurs have flashed deep-playoff-run potential, but they’ve been too inconsistent in a few areas for anyone to bank on that happening yet.
Asked before the game what areas the Spurs need to shore up in the second half, Mitch Johnson didn’t hesitate.
“At this spot of the journey, we’re — all of them — just trying to be more consistent. … We’ve shown potential and growth in a lot of areas, but we’ve also shown a lot to be wanted for more in terms of consistency,” the coach said.
With 12 of their next 19 games on the road, the young team will be tested early in the second half. But if they are going to achieve their goals, that consistency Johnson desires must be found.
