Where was Wembanyama’s drum at last night’s Spurs game?

Victor Wembanyama’s celebratory drum did not come out last night after the Spurs won. It’s already fueling speculation that another ritual might replace the victory lap.

For those who may not know, Victor Wembanyama debuted the drum beat as a new postgame celebration in December after the Spurs’ 130–110 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, staying on the court to lead more than 19,000 fans at the Frost Bank Center.

Surrounded by teammates, Wembanyama banged a drum with a “Go Spurs Go” design at center court as the crowd clapped in unison — a celebration created with the Spurs Jackals, a fan-led initiative he founded to help build a stronger home-court atmosphere in San Antonio.

But, after the Spurs beat the Milwaukee Bucks 119-101 on Thursday night, the celebration was noticeably subdued. People inside and outside the stadium felt the absence of the winning beat, from the game announcers to fans online, including the self-proclaimed Spurs Jesus himself.

“No drum?!” the prophetic mascot exclaimed on Instagram. “A lot of fans were talking about how they were disappointed last night over the lack of drum.”

Spurs Jesus pointed out that Rumble the Bison, the Oklahoma City Thunder mascot, brought out an identical drum and banged it before the game and the fans all clapped the exact same way as Wemby had instructed.

“He (Wemby) had a look on his face as he shook his head and said ‘it’s not the same,’” Spurs Jesus said. “I’m wondering if he’s coming up with something better. What do you think?”
