San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet (7) points to his teammates after making a basket against the Oklahoma City Thunder during the fourth quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2025. The Spurs defeated the Thunder, 130-110.

BOSTON — Even though T-shirts sporting the celebratory pose he struck after his game-sealing block in an outing earlier this season are a hot item around San Antonio, Luke Kornet decided against using them as a go-to Christmas gift.

“I gave some to my family and stuff like that, which was cool, but it feels a little narcissistic if I was just handing out those shirts,” the Spurs center said.

Kornet is no narcissist. What he has been throughout his nine NBA seasons, including five with the Boston Celtics, is a highly valued teammate known as much for his unique sense of humor as he is for his skills as a pick-and-roll maven and fierce rim protector.

“Luke is great,” Spurs forward Harrison Barnes said. “One of the funniest teammates I’ve ever had.”

Kornet also left the Celtics in stitches.

“Luke is one of the best teammates you can have … He lifts everybody’s spirits,” the Boston Herald quoted Jayson Tatum as saying last February of the player Celtics fans called “The Green Kornet.”

Saturday night’s game is Kornet’s first at TD Garden since he recorded 10 points on 5 of 5 from the field, nine rebounds and a career-high seven blocks in 26 minutes off the bench in a 127-102 win over New York last May in Game 5 of the East semifinals.

The Spurs got a glimpse of Kornet’s wisecracking ways when he was asked at his introductory media session after signing a four-year, $41 million contract in July why he chose No. 7. Kornet needed a new number because the No. 40 he wore as a Celtic belonged to Barnes.

“I just hope to be a third of the player Tim Duncan was,” Kornet quipped.

A sense of humor is a valuable trait to have during the long, grueling NBA season.

“This is my 17th year of being in any NBA locker room, and … I really enjoy a diverse mix of personalities,” Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick said. “We get a lot of joy when ‘DA’ (Deandre Ayton) kind of goes on his rants. That’s always fun for us. The season can get really monotonous. There’s got to be some levity to it.”

Gregg Popovich often said during his lengthy Hall of Fame run coaching the Spurs he valued anybody who could make him smile.

“A sense of humor is a huge thing with us,” Popovich said in 2016. “You’ve got to be able to laugh. You’ve got to be able to take a dig, give a dig — that sort of thing. And feel comfortable in your own skin that you don’t have all the answers.”

Kornet, 30, fits that description perfectly.

“Luke is very smart and comfortable in his own skin, so he’s not afraid to say whatever, and he can think outside the box,” said Mitch Johnson, Popovich’s successor. “So it causes good laughs for us, especially when we have so many mild-mannered guys around him. We need a little bit of lightheartedness.”

Kornet drew laughs nationally when he struck Vince Carter’s iconic 2000 dunk contest pose after blocking Franz Wagner’s last-second layup to secure the Spurs’ 114-112 win at Orlando in early December.

ORLANDO, FLORIDA - DECEMBER 03: Luke Kornet #7 of the San Antonio Spurs blocks a shot attempt by Franz Wagner #22 of the Orlando Magic during the fourth quarter at Kia Center on December 03, 2025 in Orlando, Florida.

“It’s a lot of weight, being an icon,” Kornet joked when asked about his celebration going viral. “This is how Helen of Troy felt, I think.”

Kornet also had his teammates rolling after his two-handed dunk over Aaron Nesmith in a recent win at Indiana. After Nesmith delivered a hard foul to his head, Kornet tapped his noggin repeatedly from the floor while staring up at the Pacers forward. Once on his feet, Kornet pointed toward Kelly Olynyk, who had a thundering dunk of his own in the game, on the Spurs bench as if to say, 'That one was for you."

Kornet also had several entertaining, spontaneous celebrations with Boston, including barking like a dog at the Celtics bench after he corralled an offensive rebound over multiple defenders and drew a foul in a 2024 playoff game against Cleveland.

Asked about the origin of his woofs, Kornet told NBC Sports Boston, “I get some good practice at home reading some kid’s books. There’s quite a lot of dog barking.”

Kornet’s vaudeville routine is all in the name of amusing his teammates.

“He definitely keeps a locker room light,” Barnes said. “He always has a quip, a message in the group chat, just something off the wall you wouldn’t expect. His celebration in Orlando, that was off the fly, the dunk in Indiana with the bench reaction to Kelly. He’s quick on his feet. You never know what you are going to get.”

Kornet’s cleverness befits somebody who religiously watched “Saturday Night Live” while growing up in Kentucky and later North Texas. A comedy connoisseur, he counts the late Norm McDonald, Nate Bargatze and Gary Gulman among his favorite funnymen.

“I love comedy in general,” he told the San Antonio Express-News. “It was a way of connecting with friends.”

When it comes to his own gags, Kornet said he doesn’t have a particular style, preferring just do whatever he thinks the moment calls for.

“It’s never intentional for the sake of it as much as it is just a way of living and wanting to enjoy time with people,” he said. “It’s just kind of a part of my personality and a way to connect with people, and kind of just how my mind is working a lot of times. Honestly, a lot of it has to do just with time and score, so to speak, where it’s like sometimes it’s appropriate and sometimes it’s not.”

Humor isn’t the only trait that makes Kornet popular in the locker room. He’s also quite the conversationalist.

“One thing I love about him is he brings another perspective to the debates we have with some of his anecdotes,” Victor Wembanyama said. “He’s a very cultured guy, so it’s interesting to talk to him.”

Kornet fit in well in cosmopolitan Boston. He played there from 2020 through 2025, a stint that included helping the Celtics win the 2024 NBA title and appearing in 42 playoff games for the storied franchise.

“It’s just a very historic place that has a lot of identity,” he said of Boston. “People had been there for a long time and really love their town and their sports teams. I was there for a special time. Just within the basketball organization, I had great relationships with a lot of people for a lot of years and it was a gift to play with them and be coached by them and led by them. I learned a lot about playing in this league but also about just being a teammate and having perspective.”

A devout Catholic, Kornet said if he had more time on this trip he would make the short drive to Waltham to visit friends at the parish, Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted, where he and his wife Tierney and their daughter and son were members.

“It was like a home for us and our priest was like a father for us, so it was great,” he said.

On the court, Kornet has been a valuable piece for the up-and-coming Spurs, starting a career-high 21 games while Wembanyama has nursed various injuries or come off the bench to better manage his recoveries.

His teammates rave about Kornet’s high basketball IQ and instincts.

“He knows when to short roll, he knows when to roll all into the basket, when to look for a lob, when to look for dump offs. He knows when to go high. He knows screening angles,” De’Aaron Fox said of Kornet, who is averaging 8.4 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks — all career highs — in 29 appearances.

“Those are things coaches would love for bigs to come in and just know how to do. But obviously he’s been around for a while and he’s been on a championship team, and he knows how he can affect the game outside of just catching lobs and blocking shots. He does things that don’t show up in the box score.”

And there’s also plenty of value in the laughs he provides.

“I feel like what we’re doing is obviously really important, but then there’s also life outside of it,” Kornet said. “It’s always nice to have that in its proper order.”
