Jeremy Sochan reacts to poke in the face from Lakers’ Vanderbilt

Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan poked fun at a Los Angeles Laker who poked him in the face after Wednesday night’s game.

Moments after the Spurs downed the Lakers 107-91 to solidify their hold on the No. 2 spot in the West standings, Jarred Vanderbilt reached out with his right hand to tap Sochan’s chin before Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox pushed Vanderbilt away.

Sochan was asked about the incident by reporters in the locker room.

“We just had a polite exchange and, I was, I think, very joyful and, you know, the other person wasn’t,” Sochan said, referring to Vanderbilt.

“He wasn’t stable in that moment. So, something he has to work on.”

Sochan has a reputation for getting under the skin of opponents. His latest altercation came after he had six points on the strength of a pair of 3-pointers, and an assist in 11 minutes in helping the Spurs improve to 2-1 against Luka Doncic and the Lakers.

It was the second straight game Sochan has logged 10 or more meaningful minutes after four games in which he didn’t get off the bench.

The Spurs praised him for staying ready and exhibiting a professional attitude while he was out of coach Mitch Johnson’s rotation.

“I thought he competed his butt off,” Johnson said. "He did a great job offensively. Shot the ones that came to him and he was in rhythm, made them. And other times he made great plays off the basketball, screening or driving in the paint and kicking it out.

“This is a long season. We’re going to need a lot of people at different times and we have all year, and it’s been great to have him be a contributor the last couple games.”

Johnson said before the game he wanted to reward Sochan for playing well the night before in the 106-105 loss at Memphis, when he finished with two points, six rebounds and an assist in 14 minutes.

“We didn’t win the game. His box score wasn’t something that if you didn’t watch the game, you’d say, ‘Oh, Sochan had a monster game tonight,’” Johnson said. “But if you watched the game, he helped change the trajectory of the game. That’s something that if we don’t acknowledge that, then we’re going to lose a lot of credibility in that locker room, and we should.”

Spurs star Victor Wembanyama praised Sochan as a “soldier” who will “answer the call of the coach anytime.”

“I know the impression is that he wishes he had his chance more, that he could show more things,” Wembanyama said. “But whether it’s 30 seconds or in a night like today or yesterday, he shows things. He shows up on the court. Effort is never a question for him. Effort’s always there. And I know, of course, it’s hard, and I hope that he has his chance more.”
