MEMPHIS, Tenn. – When starting guard Devin Vassell went on the injured list with a groin strain last week, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson didn’t have to look to far to find a replacement.
Julian Champagnie is and has always been Johnson’s preferred choice as an emergency fill-in starter.
“He is a versatility piece for us that fits with a lot of lineups,” Johnson said of the 24-year-old small forward. “That’s why he has been chosen to do that.”
Indeed, Champagnie has been something of a human Band-Aid during the Spurs’ injury marred start to the season.
The fourth-year pro is set for his fourth consecutive start Tuesday, when the Spurs take on the Memphis Grizzlies at the FedEx Forum.
His previous three were (mostly) successful. Champagnie’s masterpiece against New York on New Year’s Eve earned most of the attention – a career-best 36 points with a club record 11 3-pointers in a 136-134 victory.
After a 2-for-13 performance two nights later in a win at Indiana, Champagnie bounced back in Saturday’s 115-110 home defeat against Portland, going 8 of 14 with 20 points.
Champagnie also grabbed 10 rebounds against the Trail Blazers, marking the seventh time this season he has led the team in boards.
It is all in a night’s work, Champagnie said.
“I think we’ve been here before,” Champagnie said. “Obviously a guy goes down and someone has to step up and figure things out.”
Champagnie has started 21 out of 35 games this season while filling in for one injured starter or another.
He is averaging 10.8 points and 5.8 rebounds, career highs for a season in which he appeared in more than 15 contests.
“Julian has a gravity to him every time he steps on the court,” guard De’Aaron Fox said. “People know that he can get hot. He can be 0 for 4, 0 for 5 and a team still knows that he can shoot the ball. So just having him out there opens up lanes for us to drive. And obviously whenever he gets it going, it changes the game for us.”
Castle-to-Kornet pays off
Even with Victor Wembanyama out for the past two games with a left knee injury, the Spurs’ lob game remains on point. That’s because the Spurs still have 7-foot-1 Luke Kornet rolling to the basket, with Stephon Castle throwing him alley-oops.
“He’s a lot of fun to play with,” Kornet said.
The Castle-Kornet connection was on display again in the loss to the Blazers, with the pair teaming up for two more lob dunks.
Kornet finished the night with 23 points, his most in a Spurs uniform and the most he has tallied for any team since posting a career-high 25 with Chicago in a Feb. 9, 2000 loss against Philadelphia.
Castle, meanwhile, found his way to a game-high nine assists.
“Steph is really good at pick and roll,” Kornet said. “He’s got a great awareness. And he’s a very willing and good passer.”
Back-to-backs galore
Tuesday’s game marks the start of the Spurs’ third consecutive back-to-back. They are 9-1 in back-to-back games this season (5-0 in first games, 4-1 in second games) after losing to the Blazers on Saturday night.
On the flip side, the Spurs have two days off between games on five occasions this month, the most in the NBA.
