3 Takeways as Champagnie shoots the Spurs past Knicks

San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30) beats the drum at the conclusion of an NBA game with the New York Knicks in San Antonio, Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025. Champagne scored a game high 36 points to help the Spurs beat the Knicks 134-132.
Julian Champagnie rang in the New Year by ringing up the New York Knicks.
Champagnie threw in 11 3-pointers en route to a career-high 36 points to lead the Spurs to a come-from-behind 134-132 victory over New York at the Frost Bank Center.
The 24-year-old small forward only drew the start because Devin Vassell was out with a groin strain.
He ended up breaking Chuck Person’s Spurs franchise record for 3-pointers. Person made nine in 1997.
Victor Wembanyama roared to 31 points and 13 rebounds before limping off the floor in the fourth quarter with a hyperextended knee.
It was a battle of the No. 2 team in the Western and Eastern Conference, and a rematch of the NBA Cup final the Knicks won earlier this month in Las Vegas.
It had a little bit of everything.
The Spurs trailed by 19 points in the first half, rallied to take a lead in the third quarter before falling behind by 10 again, then had to close out the game with Wembanyama unavailable but cheering from the bench in slippers.
De’Aaron Fox helped push the Spurs over the top with 26 points.
Jalen Brunson scored 26 points to lead New York, while Miles McBride (24) and Jordan Clarkson (20) starred off the bench.
The Spurs broke a two-game losing streak, and have now won nine of their past 11 heading into Friday’s game at Indiana that opens the new calendar year.
Here are three takeaways from Wednesday’s victory, which improved the Spurs to 24-9:
1. Champagnie’s eruption wasn’t completely out of nowhere, but …
It was pretty close.
Champagnie is known as a 3-point shooter, but coming into Wednesday had missed 44 of his previous 54 3-point attempts.
Everyone in the Spurs’ locker room figured he would bounce back. Nobody could have predicted it would be in a record-setting performance.
Champagnie had eight 3-pointers in the second half – four apiece in the third and fourth quarters – to help the Spurs mount a comeback throughout all sorts of adversity.

San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30) celebrates a 3-pointer that tied the score at 86-86 during the second half of an NBA game with the New York Knicks in San Antonio, Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025. Champagne led all scorers with 36 points to help the Spurs beat the Knicks 134-132.
It is hard to imagine where the Spurs’ perimeter game would have been without Champagnie.
He made 11 of 17 3-point tries. The rest of the team was 3 of 21.
In the end, Champagnie became the first player in NBA history to record as many as 36 points without attempting 2-point shot.
2. Spurs dodge a bullet with Wemby
Initial tests on Wembanyama’s hyperextended left knee showed no major injury. In fact, he said he lobbied to return to Wednesday’s game, to no avail.
The team has scheduled further tests for Thursday, but Wembanyama made it clear he wants to play Friday at Indiana if at all possible.
“I expect to play the next game,” Wembanyama said. “I don’t know what they (the Spurs doctors) expect.”

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) is greeted by center Bismack Biyombo as he comes off the court during a time out in the second half of an NBA game with the New York Knicks in San Antonio, Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2025. The Spurs beat the Knicks 134-132.
Given the Spurs’ understandable caution with Wembanyama’s injuries over his two-plus seasons, it would not be surprising to see the team keep him sidelined against the Pacers – especially on the first night of a back-to-back.
The Spurs went 9-3 with Wembanyama out earlier this season with a left calf strain. It could be that they have to piece together another stretch without their All-Star centerpiece in the short term.
3. Fox slides back into closer role
The Spurs left it to Fox to bring the game home and he did.
The 28-year-old point guard had 11 of his points after Wembanyama exited the game, showing once again why he is one of the NBA’s premier clutch scorers.
Fox’s fourth-quarter explosion was no surprise to New York coach Mike Brown. He coached Fox for three seasons in Sacramento.
“He’s just a great player, man,” Brown said. “The stuff that’s happening here with him, it’s not a surprise to me at all.”
