In a battle of 7-foot-plus big men, the younger one came out ahead.
Donovan Clingan had a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds, Deni Avdija finished with a 29-point triple-double, and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Spurs 115-110 on Saturday night in a contest between teams playing on the second night of back-to-backs.
Luke Kornet had a season-high 23 points and a season-best five blocks for the Spurs, who had their two-game winning streak snapped to fall to 25-10, including 10-4 without Victor Wembanyama.
Clingan, the 7-foot-3 Connecticut alumnus Portland drafted seventh overall in 2024, scored 14 points in the first quarter to help the Blazers take a 35-24 lead.
Kornet, a 7-1 ninth-year pro, had eight points in the fourth after Clingan got in foul trouble.
Wembanyama missed his second game in a row with a sore left knee. The Spurs also played their third game in a row without Devin Vassell, who is nursing an injured groin.
Avdija all but clinched the win when he buried a 3-pointer over Stephon Castle to give Portland (16-20) a 114-110 lead with 49.6 seconds left. He had 11 rebounds and 10 assists to go along with his 29 points.
Toumani Camara contributed 20 points for the Blazers. He hit five 3-pointers on a night Portland shot 42.2% from deep (19 of 45).
Julian Champagnie had 20 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season and De’Aaron Fox tallied 19 for the Spurs.
The Spurs overcame a 15-point second quarter deficit to pull ahead in the third quarter, but Portland led 87-80 entering the fourth quarter after finishing the third on a 16-6 run.
The Spurs have their fingers crossed that Wembanyama won’t be sidelined much longer. His next opportunity to suit up will be Tuesday when the Spurs play at Memphis.
“Vic is looking really good,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “I expect him to travel. It’s day to day, and that (game against the Grizzlies) is more than a couple of days away, but it’s going well. We all want him to play. I know he’s champing at the bit, and we’ll get him out there as soon as we can.”
Here are three takeaways from the Spurs’ second of three games against Portland this season:
1. Blazers won the hustle game
Portland outworked the Spurs in the first quarter for a 35-24 lead and kept fighting the rest of the way.
It was exactly how Blazers acting head coach Tiago Splitter drew it up.
Before the game, the former Spur talked about the need for his team to outrebound San Antonio and do the dirty work after the Spurs played “with more energy” in downing the Blazers 115-102 on Nov. 26 in Portland.
On Saturday, the Blazers ended up outrebounding the Spurs 52-48, including a 16-12 edge in offensive boards, with Clingan collecting six of those.
Portland also finished with a 26-18 edge in second-chance points.
“They had a better ability to just get those 50-50 balls, loose open rebounds,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “Just that other level of effort to finish off possessions they did a great job of.”

San Antonio Spurs forward Lindy Waters III (43) and forward Harrison Barnes (40) compete with Portland Trail Blazers forward Toumani Camara (33) and center Donovan Clingan (23) for a rebound during the first half of an NBA basketball game in San Antonio, Saturday, Jan. 3, 2026.
2. Rookies keep their heads up
Spurs rookies Dylan Harper and Carter Bryant both struggled Saturday night.
Harper was scoreless midway through the third quarter after missing his first eight shots from the field. But he kept plugging away until he hit consecutive 3-pointers late in the period to finish the game with six points — six below his average — on 2-of-12 shooting.
Bryant missed yet another dunk, this time on a breakaway in the second period. But, as usual, he didn’t hang his head afterward and was quick to focus defensively.
Having a short memory is a good thing for anybody in the NBA, and nobody needs to remind Harper and Bryant to just move on when things don’t go their way.
3. Former Spur gives Blazers a spark
Not one to lack confidence, former Spur Sidy Cissoko said he’s “doing a great job” with the increased playing time he’s been receiving in his fourth NBA season and first full year with Portland.
Splitter agreed with that assessment. Playing under a two-way contract, the 6-foot-7, 220-pound forward entered Saturday’s game having started 12 of his 31 games this season and averaging a career-best 20.4 minutes per game.
“He plays hard, brings it every night,” Splitter said of Cissoko, who the Spurs traded last February after selecting him in the second round in 2023. “He did that with less minutes, with more minutes. He knows he’s going to bring fire to the game, and I love that.”
Cissoko did his coach proud on Saturday night, scoring seven points and grabbing six rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.
