Highlights: Luke Kornet drops season-high 23 points in loss to Trail Blazers

Coming off a victory against the Indiana Pacers, the Spurs returned home on a SEGABABA versus the Portland Trail Blazers. The Spurs once again would be without Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell due to their respective injuries. The Spurs had one of their slowest starts of the season, where they trailed as much as 13 points in the first quarter. After falling behind by 15 points in the second, the Spurs managed to lock down defensively and cut the deficit to four heading into halftime. After a back-and-forth third, the Spurs’ deficit leapt back up to seven. The Spurs managed to crawl their way back after trailing by as much as 13 once again, and cut the deficit to one with 1:36 remaining. However, De’Aaron Fox missed a midrange jumper after picking off Deni Avdija. Avdija proceeded to ice the game with a stepback three, and the Spurs ultimately lost 115-110.

Luke Kornet led the way with a season-high 23 points (10-12 FG), eight rebounds, five blocks, and three assists. Luke was nearly unstoppable in the paint on both ends. Not only did he record a season-high in points, but his five blocks also tied his season-high. He remains one of the best backup centers in the league, and an amazing insurance policy for Wemby. As he continues having the best season of his career, you can always count on him to finish a lob with a jam!

Throw it up and let Luke take care of the rest

Julian Champagnie dropped a double-double: 20 points (8-14 FG) and 10 rebounds to go along with four assists. After having an ice-cold shooting night versus Indiana, Julian had a bounce-back game by dropping four threes and getting buckets around the paint. He has been a solid start at the small forward position after Vassell’s injury, and his defense remains an underrated part of his game.

De’Aaron Fox dropped 19 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Continuing off where he left off versus Indiana, D-Fox showed off his two-way ability versus the Blazers. What’s also impressive is that he did not have a single turnover. A usual king of the fourth quarter, D-Fox will look to knock down his next clutch opportunity. But for now, enjoy his speed and deceleration for the easy bunny in the paint!

Regardless of injury, this was a disappointing loss. Once you put yourself in a hole down double digits, you are just making it harder to come back and stay aggressive. Despite the defensive lapses, the silver and black still found ways to claw their way back, but they did not execute effectively. Another unusual factor was the lack of bench production, especially from Keldon Johnson and Dylan Harper. Nonetheless, the Spurs will have the next two days off for their next contest. According to Mitch Johnson, Wemby will travel with the team, but his game status for Tuesday’s game against Memphis is still in question. Flush this loss down the toilet and regroup.

Finally, here are the full game highlights.

The Spurs go on the road to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies this upcoming Tuesday at 7:00 P.M. (CST) on FDSN-SW.
