pic.twitter.com/6B2SKUDmLV

3 takeaways as Spurs hold off Portland without Wembanyama and Castle

San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson (3) reacts to a 3-pointer made by San Antonio Spurs forward Carter Bryant (11) during the fourth quarter against the Portland Trail Blazers at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, April 8, 2026. The Spurs defeated the Trail Blazers 112-101.

About an hour and a half before tipoff Wednesday, someone informed the Spurs’ Luke Kornet he would be starting at center in place of the usual 7-foot-4 French extraterrestrial.

As if he needed the reminder.

“My Ninth Man of the Year candidacy is looking a little shaky,” Kornet said.

The Spurs would enjoy Kornet returning to his bench role as soon as possible, if it means Victor Wembanyama returns to the lineup.

With Wembanyama out with a left rib contusion, the Spurs did what they do and topped Portland 112-101 at the Frost Bank Center.

With Stephon Castle (knee) also out, the Spurs were led by De’Aaron Fox’s 25 points. Keldon Johnson added 20 off the bench and rookie Carter Bryant totaled a season-high 17.

Deni Avdija scored 29 points and Scoot Henderson added 20 for Portland, which dropped to 40-40 and missed a chance to pull even with the Los Angeles Clippers for eighth place in the Western Conference.

The Spurs fell behind 8-2 out of the gate Wednesday, notable because it was the largest deficit they have faced in the past 10 games.

It didn’t seem to faze them.

The Spurs led by 10 points at half, then used a 13-2 run at the end of the third quarter to pull away for good.

The victory improved the Spurs to 61-19. With two more victories, the Spurs can tie the 2005-06 squad for the second-most wins in club history.

The 2015-16 team holds the franchise record with 67 victories.

Here are three takeaways from Wednesday’s victory:

1. Spurs letting playoff matchup play out

Over the past week, the Spurs had a chance to loosely affect their first-round playoff matchup, but declined to participate.

The Spurs faced the Clippers and Trail Blazers, and beat them both without Wembanyama.

What does that mean in terms of the Spurs’ first-round opponent?

As the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, the Spurs are set to face the winner of the 7-8 play-in game.

Phoenix is all but locked into the No. 7 seed.

The Los Angeles Clippers and Portland were engaged in a battle for 8th and 9th, with the loser out of the running to face the Spurs in the first round.

With Wednesday’s loss, Portland fell two games behind the Clippers in ninth, needing to win out into order to overtake L.A. for the No. 8 spot.

Those teams face each other Friday. If Portland wins that one and again in its season finale against Sacramento, the Blazers would face the Suns for the right to face the Spurs.

2. Fox lifts short-handed Spurs again

With Wembanyama and Castle both out Wednesday, it was Fox who once again got the Spurs pointed in the right direction.

He scored 11 of his points in the first quarter en route to his highest-scoring game since March 12.

When the Spurs are at full strength, Fox often has to pick his spots.

He did not have to pick his spots Wednesday.

Fox got up 20 shots, his second-most of the season, making 10. He handed out a team-high seven assists. He chipped into the gang rebounding effort with five.

Fox has spent most of his season fitting into the group effort the Spurs are touting. Wednesday, he took the opportunity to stand out.

3. Carter Bryant’s best NBA game went beyond scoring

The rookie made a season-best five 3-pointers on the way to a season-best scoring total.

But that wasn’t all that stood out to coach Mitch Johnson.

Seeing most of his minutes as a small-ball center, Bryant grabbed five rebounds. He had three on the offensive end, matching the output of 7-2 Blazers center Donovan Clingan, who leads the NBA in that category.

Bryant logged four assists, including a couple of nifty drop-offs to Luke Kornet and Keldon Johnson for layups.

He was a huge part of a Spurs’ bench that outscored Portland’s 48-10.

Whether Bryant has shown enough 80 games into his rookie season to fully earn the coaching staff’s trust in the postseason remains to be seen.

Games like Wednesday’s only help his cause.
