3 takeaways as Spurs slay Thunder again, win seventh in a row

San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson (3) reacts after making a three-pointer against the Oklahoma City Thunder during the fourth quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2025. The Spurs defeated the Thunder, 130-110.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson swears his team did not enter the season with only one specific expectation.
“Our expectation is we wanted to be better than we were last year,” Johnson said.
It is fair the Spurs are on pace to blow that standard out of the water.
Behind 25 points off the bench from Keldon Johnson and 24 from Stephon Castle, the Spurs routed Oklahoma City 130-110 at the Frost Bank Center on Tuesday night.
It marked the Spurs’ second victory over the defending NBA champions in the past 10 days.
The previous was a 111-109 triumph over OKC in the NBA Cup semifinals in Las Vegas.
Unlike that meeting, Tuesday’s contest did not come down to the wire.
In a battle between the top two teams in the Western Conference, the surprising and surging Spurs outscored OKC 43-28 in the fourth quarter to blow open a game that had been a back-and-forth slugfest.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the NBA’s reigning MVP, scored 33 to lead the Thunder, while Jalen Williams added 17.
With a combination of physicality and defensive activity, the Spurs found success against OKC’s other scorers, holding the rest of them to 15 or less.
Victor Wembanyama had a modest 12 points and five rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench for the Spurs.
The Spurs remain one of three teams to defeat Oklahoma City this season, but the only team to beat the Thunder twice.
The Spurs will not have much time to celebrate their victory. The teams face a rematch Christmas Day in Oklahoma City, with another meeting looming quickly in mid-January.
Here are three takeaways from Tuesday’s victory, which improved the Spurs to 22-7 dropped OKC to 26-4:
1. There will be (more) blood
The Spurs are not sweating the OKC-heavy portion of their schedule. In fact, they see a definite benefit in playing so many games against the champs in such a short span.
“It’s a great way to keep us sharp,” forward Harrison Barnes said.
Several players compared the vibe to a watered-down version of a postseason series, with the teams learning each other and making adjustments by the game.
Over the opening months of the season, the Spurs’ goal has morphed from just making the playoffs to making the playoffs and making noise when they get there.
To accomplish that, there’s a good chance they will have to scratch and claw their way past the Thunder.
With that in mind, a string of meetings in December and January should provide good practice.
“When you think of where you want to go, the postseason, we’re on a collision course with this team,” Barnes said. “It’s good for us to continue to have the opportunity to have this kind of preparation.”

San Antonio Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama (1) goes up for a shot over Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren (7) during the first quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2025.
2. SGA extends his streak, while Wemby’s goes down
Tuesday’s game featured two remarkable individual streaks.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s survived. Wembanyama’s did not.
The Thunder guard surpassed 20 points for the 101st consecutive game, extending the second-longest streak in NBA history behind Wilt Chamberlain’s.
Wembanyama, meanwhile, failed to block a shot for the first time since Jan. 10, 2024. It snapped a string of 101 consecutive games with a swat.
That was the third-longest streak in league annals behind Patrick Ewing and Dikembe Mutombo.
Wembanyama, however, was no doubt buoyed by the extension of another streak.
The Spurs have won seven games in a row, the longest active streak in the NBA.
3. Spurs’ depth remains a sight to behold
The Spurs’ previous six games featured a cavalcade of depth, with six different leading scorers: Barnes, Castle, Devin Vassell, Dylan Harper, Wembanyama, and Fox.
In Keldon Johnson, the Spurs added a seventh name in as many games to that list.
The most significant part of the Spurs’ season to date has been the sheer number of players they can roll out who have a positive impact.
Tuesday, the Spurs blasted the defending champions with their top two scorers (Wembanyama and Fox) combining for a modest 18 points.
