WASHINGTON - The Spurs signed Warren High alumnus Stanley Umude to a two-way contract Sunday.

To make room for Umude, the Spurs waived two-way play Kyle Mangas.

Umude, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound wing, appeared in 11 games with the Austin Spurs after going through training camp with the Spurs. He averaged 20.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 35.8 minutes for Austin in G League action.

Umude played in 47 NBA games with Detroit and Milwaukee on previous two-way deals, averaging 3.1 points and 1.4 rebounds in 8.4 minutes.

“He was great in camp,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said before Sunday’s game with the Wizards. “He probably is one of those where the numbers game was the only reason he wasn’t on a two-way at the start of the season. He helped us. He had a great approach. I believe he had an ankle (injury) early on in the G League season, so he was a little in and out of the lineup. But he’s had a great season for them so far and it’s great to be able to give him that opportunity.”

Johnson said the Spurs like Umude’s defensive skills.

“You have a guy like that who’s 6-6, 6-7, athletic with the defensive mindset,” Johnson said. “That’s a pretty good mix when you can have the potential physically and athletically along with the right mentality.”
