Warren grad Stanley Umude makes hometown debut for Spurs

A 26-year-old Warren High alum, Stanley Umude became the fifth player from a San Antonio high school to have appeared in a regular-season game for the Spurs.
With 2:10 remaining Sunday, Spurs guard Stanley Umude checked into a game that was already decided. He did so to little discernible fanfare.
The longtime San Antonio resident took time to savor the moment anyway.
“It was huge to me,” Umude said.
Just by stepping foot on the Frost Bank Center floor for garbage time of a 112-103 win over Orlando, Umude joined a select club in franchise history.
A 26-year-old Warren High alum, Umude became the fifth player from a San Antonio high school to have appeared in a regular-season game for the Spurs.
The others on that list: Devin Brown (Southwest), Eric Dawson (Sam Houston), Charles Bassey (St. Anthony) and Keith Edmondson (MacArthur).
“It’s a big deal to be playing for the hometown team,” said Umude, who graduated from Warren in 2017. “A lot of people don’t get to do that.”
Before this season, Umude had logged 47 NBA appearances in three seasons split between Detroit and Milwaukee. He is playing for the Spurs on a two-way contract.
With the Spurs enduring travel delays leading to Sunday’s game, Umude and fellow two-way player Harrison Ingram were called up from the G League to bolster depth.
Umude said a group of about 10 friends and family, including his mom, attended Sunday’s game on the off chance he got in the game. Umude did not score or even attempt a shot during his fourth-quarter cameo. It remained maybe the best two minutes of his NBA career so far.
“There was no nervousness,” Umude said. “It’s my fourth year now. But being at home and taking it all in, it’s a big deal for sure.”
