3 takeaways as Spurs’ Dylan Harper scores 24 in rout of Wizards

Image
San Antonio Spurs guard Dylan Harper (2) drives into the lane on Washington Wizards forward Marvin Bagley III (35) during the first half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Thursday, Dec. 18, 2025. San Antonio beat Washington 119-94.

Rookie Dylan Harper had a season-high 24 points off the bench to help the Spurs rout the lowly Washington Wizards 119-94 on Thursday night.

Devin Vassell scored 18 points and Victor Wembanyama came off the bench for the third straight game to score 13 of his 15 points in the second half in the Spurs’ first game at the Frost Bank Center since Dec. 2.

Stephon Castle had 17 points and six assists, and Julian Champagnie came off the bench for 12 points for the Spurs, who improved to 19-7 with their their fourth win in a row, excluding the loss to New York in the NBA Cup championship game on Tuesday night in Las Vegas, which didn’t count in the standings.

Wembanyama, who finished with 17 minutes after entering the game for the first time to loud applause from the sellout crowd of 18,754 with 8:59 left in the first half, also contributed eight rebounds, four assists and four blocks. According to the Spurs, he’s only the second player in NBA history to post 15/8/4/4 in under 20 minutes. Herb Williams did it in just 13 minutes in 1983, per the Spurs.

With the Spurs playing the first game of a back-to-back that will end in Atlanta, Wembanyama was on a minutes restriction for the third straight game after missing 12 in a row with an injured calf.

Paced by Wembanyama’s nine points, the Spurs outscored the Wizards 34-22 in the third quarter to take control of the game.

Alex Saar led Washington (4-21) with 18 points. Bub Carrington contributed 17 points for the Wizards, who were outscored 28-19 in the fourth quarter.

Wizards guard Malaki Branham, who the Spurs traded to Washington this past summer, received a nice round of applause after the Spurs welcomed him back with a pre-game tribute.

Branham spent three seasons with the Spurs after they selected him 20th overall in the 2022 draft. The Ohio State alumnus was inactive due to a thumb injury after entering the game averaging only 3.6 points in 8.0 minutes over 11 games.

Here are three takeaways from the first of two games the Spurs will play against the Wizards in four days.

1. Harper playing great — but the best is yet to come

The No. 2 overall pick hit 9 of 13 from the field, including 3 of 5 from 3-point range, on his way to eclipsing the 22 points he scored in a win at New Orleans on Dec. 8.

It also was a fitting follow up to the 21 points on 7 of 14, including 5 of 7 from deep, he scored against the Knicks.

As good as Harper has been lately, the high-ceiling New Jersey native is just scratching the surface. Thursday’s game was just his 16th of the season. Imagine what he’ll be doing once he becomes more comfortable with the NBA, hones his outside shot even more and increases his knowledge of his opponents.

One aspect of his game that’s already gotten better is his perimeter shooting.

“Just putting the work in,” he said of why it’s improved of late. “We just keep shooting, shooting, shooting, focusing on the right things, whether that’s pre-game, whether that’s my off day going to the gym and shooting. Just staying consistent with that and just trying to get that better.”

2. Wembanyama had plenty of highlights in limited minutes

Shortly after he entered the game in the second period, Wembanyama dazzled the crowd with a no-look pass that set up Luke Kornet for an easy inside bucket. The 7-foot-4 Frenchman’s first points then came on a George Gervin-style finger-roll drive with 4:28 left in the half.

But Wembanyama outdid those two highlights when he blocked an inside shot by Kyshawn George before dribbling to the other end on a one-man fastbreak he capped by blowing past a pair of Wizards in the lane for a slam that gave the Spurs a 79-65 lead with about five minutes left in the third quarter.

The performance was a reminder why so many fans scramble for Spurs tickets, even for games when Wembanyama doesn’t carry his usual heavy workload.

“The stuff you see is crazy,” Harper said of Wembanyama’s exploits. "In practice, he does that every day. So I think to us, it’s a regular day, but I can understand why from the outside looking in, it’s like, ‘Whoa.’ "

3. Washington’s Champagnie same as Spurs’ Champagnie

Wizards forward Justin Champagnie has all the same attributes as his twin brother Julian. Just ask Washington coach Brian Keefe.

“He’s been terrific since he joined our program," Keefe said. "First of all, his character as a person and as a human being. He’s one of the guys we really respect in our locker room from how he carries himself, how he approaches every day. But then with his play, it’s contagious with his energy and his ability to crash the offensive rebound, his cutting, his timely blocks and steals. Just brings a lot to our team and has really been playing here well lately.”

Julian Champagnie finished with 12 points and seven rebounds for the Spurs. Justin had three points and a team-high nine rebounds.
