LOS ANGELES — Spurs forward Keldon Johnson spoke before Wednesday’s game against the Lakers about his desire to use his NBA Cup cash to add to his growing collection of animals on his farm in Boerne, and then came out in the first period like a man ready to buy a whole herd of longhorns.
The “Big Body” scored 13 of his 17 points in the opening frame. He hit 5 of 6 from the field and a perfect 3 of 3 from deep in the quarter, helping the Spurs to a 39-30 advantage.
Johnson didn’t score again until late in the third period, but his early work set the tone for the Spurs.
“I feel like we definitely had to set the tone with the opposition we were playing,” Johnson said. "They have some great players, and if you let them get their way early in the game and you don’t set the tone offensively and on defense, it would be a long game.
“So knowing that, I just had to come out and mix it up. I just tried to set the tone energy-wise and set the mentality that, OK, we are not just coming here to play but to win. We’re coming here to make noise. And that’s my job as being a leader of the team.”

He puts his body in harm’s way for the betterment of the team every game. He is the heart and soul of the team. We got a lot of big personalities and we got a face of the franchise (in Victor Wembanyama), but that guy’s the heart and soul of the team.”
Said Stephon Castle, who led the Spurs with 30 points and 10 rebounds, “I think KJ is the heart and soul of this team. He’s been here the longest, and he has a great voice in our locker room, in our huddle. He’s going to do whatever it takes for us to win. He makes those little (hustle) plays all the time and it is like it’s nothing for him.”
