CLEVELAND – The Spurs are headed into Friday’s game at Cleveland short-handed. And also just short.
Center Luke Kornet has been ruled out with a left ankle sprain, an absence coach Mitch Johnson said would have a “ripple effect” throughout the lineup for the near term.
Kornet suffered the injury during the Spurs’ gritty 114-112 victory at Orlando on Wednesday.
“It’s minor," Johnson said. "It was a good sprain but I don’t think it’s something that will be too lingering.”
The 7-foot-1 Kornet had started the previous nine games in place of the 7-4 Victor Wembanyama, who is out with a calf strain.
A little more than an hour before tipoff Friday at Rocket Arena, Johnson said he and the staff were still unsure who would start in place of Kornet.
It would either be the 6-10 Kelly Olynyk, 6-8 Bismack Biyombo or, in what would be considered a small-ball option, the 6-8 Jeremy Sochan.
“You start this guy, and then you’ve got to bring somebody off the bench, and what’s the groups and combinations behind that?” Johnson said. “It will be probably be a lot of just shooting from the hip.”
Kornet missed seven games earlier this season with an injury to the same ankle, as well as a shoulder sprain. He is considered day-to-day with his latest injury.
He was added to a lengthy injury report that includes Wembanyama, Stephon Castle (hip) and Jordan McLaughlin (hamstring). The Cavaliers are in bad shape as well, with Jarrett Allen (finger), Darius Garland (toe), Sam Merrill (hand), Larry Nance Jr. (calf), Max Strus (foot) and Tyrese Proctor (personal) all rule out.
Evan Mobley, last season’s NBA Defensive Player of the Year, missed shootaround Friday morning with an illness. Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson said Mobley would be a game-time decision after warming up at Rocket Arena.
