Back in the same arena where the Spurs’ defense allowed its highest point total of the season (130), Mitch Johnson’s team hoped it would make up for its disappointing loss that occurred just three weeks earlier.

It appears, however, that the Phoenix Suns have the Spurs’ number – for now at least. Up by 11 in the first half, a disastrous second half led to the Spurs’ fifth loss of the season, as they fell to the Suns, 111-102.

“We didn’t come out with the right approach at the start and they got a few shots that were probably too comfortable,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “They made some plays obviously, so credit to them, but I thought we could have showed a lot more resistance and discipline at times with the gameplan execution, especially in the third quarter.”

The Spurs shot just 41.6% from the floor and 29.4% from three on the night, as they were outscored 62-46 in the second half.

Suns forward Dillon Brooks led the way with 25 points on 10-of-24 shooting. Devin Booker added 24 points, five rebounds and seven assists of his own, while Jordan Goodwin (15), Collin Gillespie (15) and Mark Williams (15) all posted double figures.

Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s loss, which dropped the Spurs to 11-5 on the season:

  1. Turnovers prove to be costly

It can be difficult to beat teams when you lose the turnover battle by a margin of 13. The Spurs turned the ball over 19 times, while forcing just six.

“(There was) sloppy execution at times, on us,” Johnson said. “(They) got in-between probably a few times when we drove the ball, whether it was too adamant on trying to score or too adamant on trying to pass and not just letting the reads unfold on their own, organically. And we probably got a little ahead of ourselves and rushed at times and they did a good job with that. But that’s just something we’ve got to clean up.”

Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox attributed it to the Suns’ physicality.

“I think we allowed their physicality to dictate the game,” Fox said. “And I think that’s where a lot of our turnovers came from… but we can’t allow that physicality to just be able to dictate the game like that. We have to be able to hit them first. And I think even when we were up, when we got up double digits, we were losing the rebounding battle. A lot of those things, we were just extremely efficient. We were guarding a lot better. The second-chance points weren’t hurting us too much at that point, but you can’t hang your hat on that. And they continued to do what they did and they came out with the win.”

  1. The Fox finds his hole

While the Spurs may not have matched the Suns’ physicality, Fox remained aggressive, and made is way to the free throw stripe 16 times. Fox attempted more free throws (16) than field goals (11).

Fox cashed in on 14 of those attempts, while shooting 5-of-11 from the floor.

“I mean, he’s elite at [getting to the line],” Johnson said. “He puts so much pressure on the paint, on the defense, and so that’s something we continue to expect from him and we missed some shots probably around him tonight, which probably could have helped continue to open up the paint, but credit to them, they did a good job of making the ball stick and minimizing our ball movement.”

  1. Keldon Johnson stays hot

Fresh off a stellar 9-of-12 shooting night versus Atlanta where he scored 25 points, Spurs veteran sixth man Keldon Johnson continues to be efficient.

In Phoenix Sunday night, the seventh-year swingman scored 14 points off 6-of-8 shooting, while collecting six rebounds and dishing out two assists, over 25 minutes. Johnson proved to be the Spurs’ most efficient scorer on the night, and has posted double-digit point totals in four straight games.
