San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30) drives past Houston Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. (10) during the second half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Friday, Nov. 7, 2025. San Antonio beat Houston 121-110.
PORTLAND, Ore. – Two weeks ago, Julian Champagnie saw his name written in an unaccustomed place.
The Spurs’ injury report.
The fourth-year forward was listed as questionable heading into a Nov. 14 game against Golden State. In Champagnie’s mind, however, there was no question he was suiting up.
“If I can play in all 82, then I’m going to play in all 82,” Champagnie said. “I take a lot of pride in that.”
Champagnie logged 23 minutes that night, scoring 14 points in the Spurs’ loss against the Warriors. He has been predictably available for each of the Spurs’ four games since.
Barring something unforeseen, Champagnie is set to make his 120th consecutive appearance Wednesday in the Spurs’ NBA Emirates Cup game at Portland.
For Champagnie, it is an iron-man streak that dates to March of 2024. But it is only the second-longest streak on the Spurs.
That honor goes to forward Harrison Barnes, who has played in 320 straight games. The last time Barnes missed a night of work was Dec. 4, 2021 while with Sacramento.
“He has been the model of consistency for a long time,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said.
In a season in which being an NBA All-Star appears hazardous to one’s health, it is worth celebrating the durability of a pair of Spurs role players.
Through the first month of the season, stars across the league have missed about a third of the available games to be played.
The Spurs are navigating their current four-game road trip – which began Sunday with a 111-102 defeat at Phoenix – down two of their top three scorers.
All-Star center Victor Wembanyama is out with a left calf strain. Stephon Castle, the team’s starting off guard and last season’s NBA Rookie of the Year, is sidelined with a left hip flexor strain.
Barnes and Champagnie, meanwhile, keep clocking in for work.
It isn’t always easy, Champagnie said.
“I think everybody has those days,” the 24-year-old Champagnie said. “Whether you play basketball or work at a 9-to-5, there’s days where you get up and you’re like, ‘I don’t want to do this today.’ But it’s my job, and these guys are counting on me.”

Barnes owns the second-longest playing streak in the league, trailing only the NBA’s Ultimate Iron Man. New York’s Mikal Bridges has played in 571 straight contests.
Barnes’ streak is remarkable for a number of reasons.
One, he is the Spurs’ oldest player at 33. And secondly, his is not merely a string of consecutive appearances.
He has started 320 games in a row as well.
In doing so, Barnes has set himself up as an example for the Spurs’ younger players.
“One thing I try to teach our guys is the constant daily commitment it takes to be ready,” Barnes said.
To Barnes, preparedness is a point of personal pride.
It is also a lifestyle.
“It’s not just coming in and putting up shots and thinking that’s going to prepare you,” Barnes said. “It’s the weight room. It’s the time on the (training) table – before and after practice, before and after games. It’s the sleep and the diet.
“It’s a fully encompassing process to be able to show up every night at 7 p.m.”
So far this season, Barnes and Champagnie have done more than just show up every night. They have shown up well.
Barnes has opened his 14th NBA season and second in San Antonio on a tear, averaging 12.9 points while shooting a career-best 45.2% from the 3-point line.
Champagnie is averaging 10.4 points and 4.8 rebounds in 16 games, with 11 starts.
Like Barnes, Champagnie has been a plug-and-play type of player the Spurs coaching staff can count upon.
Though he did not shoot the ball well in the team’s loss at Phoenix on Sunday, going 3 of 14, Champagnie nevertheless finished with 10 points and a career-best 12 rebounds for his second career double-double.
“It’s something that probably gets overlooked too much by everybody – just availability, reliability, dependability,” Johnson said. “He’s been that for us in a lot of different ways.”
Champagnie’s persistence perhaps come from a different place than Barnes’ does.
Undrafted out of St. John’s in 2022, having bounced around the G League and waived by the Philadelphia 76ers, Champagnie doesn’t have to strain his memory banks to recall a time when no NBA team was asking him to play minutes.
Now that the Spurs are depending on him, Champagnie is not about to take his calling lightly.
“We’re all counting on everybody,” Champagnie said. “So if you could play or you feel like you could push through it, then you push through it.”
That was the mindset Champagnie carried into the night of Nov. 14, when he came perilously close to seeing his iron man streak halted by a bruised hip.
Instead, Champagnie pushed through. He is glad he did.
“I always want to play,” Champagnie said. “If I could play like that on half a working hip, then I think I’ll be OK.”
