Spurs coach Mitch Johnson believes there is an uptick in calf injuries

San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson argues against a referee call against the Spurs during an NBA game against the Atlanta Hawks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025.

The Spurs have been playing without Victor Wembanyama since he suffered a left calf strain in the Spurs’ loss to the Golden State Warriors on Nov. 14.

Wembanyama isn’t the only star missing time right now with a calf or hamstring injury, though. Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo, Memphis’ Ja Morant, Dallas’ Anthony Davis and Denver’s Aaron Gordon have missed time this season with soft-tissue injuries to the hamstring or calf.

When fielding questions from reporters before Sunday’s loss to the Phoenix Suns, Johnson was asked what he believes is the reason for so many calf and hamstring injuries occurring league-wide.

“I think my starting points would be the elementary school logic that we all have talked about in terms of the acceleration, distance covered, high speed over time and distance,” Johnson said. “And then I think there’s also a real thing that we had a unique stretch where there were some really big name players that had big injuries that were similar, and so, I understand why that could lead to some extra attention, whether that’s precaution from teams now, or just attention in general, but it seems to be a lot of attention and time going into it, so hopefully there’s some positive that comes from that.”
