Spurs will be without Victor Wembanyama for at least two weeks

The Spurs will be without All-Star center Victor Wembanyama for at least two weeks after an MRI revealed he has a left calf strain.

The injury occurred in Friday night’s loss to Golden State, the Spurs said in a release. The release also stated the team will “provide updates as appropriate,” but a league source said the 21-year-old Frenchman will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks.

Wembanyama sat out Sunday’s 123-110 win over Sacramento with what the Spurs called tightness in his left calf, missing his first game of the season.

But he underwent an MRI on Sunday that revealed a more serious injury, the same one rookie Dylan Harper suffered on Nov. 2 in Phoenix and that has the No. 2 overall pick sidelined indefinitely.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson indicated after Sunday’s game that Wembanyama likely would also miss Tuesday night’s game against Memphis.

“I know he’s champing at the bit,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “But with calf tightness … we’re not going to risk it.”

Wembanyama leads the Spurs in scoring (26.2), rebounding (12.9) and blocks (a league-high 3.6). He is also averaging 4.0 assists and 1.1 steals.

The Spurs might also be forced to play without guard Stephon Castle on Tuesday after he suffered what the team called a left hip injury in the first half against the Kings.

Johnson did not have an update after Sunday’s game regarding the extent of Castle’s injury, but the 2025 NBA Rookie of the Year described it to an San Antonio Express-News reporter in the locker room as “just soreness.”

He also said he could not pinpoint when he hurt it.

The Spurs announced shortly after the start of the second half that Castle would not return. He played 16 minutes in the first half, finishing with four points, five assists and one steal.

For the season, Castle is averaging 17.3 points, a team-best 7.5 assists, 5.8 rebounds and a team-best 1.7 steals.

Fox delivers for shorthanded team

With Wembanyama out and Castle missing the second half, Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox posted season highs for both points (28 on 11 of 20 from the field, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range) and assists (11 against just two turnovers) Sunday.

“I try to stay aggressive regardless of who’s out there, but obviously not having two guys who have the ball in their hands a lot” means more production, Fox said. “We had a group of guys that all stepped up, and for me, it was continuing to try to do what I’m doing and be a little more aggressive knowing I have other guys that are able to put the ball in the basket as well.”

Fox’s playmaking helped the Spurs land seven players in double figures, including Harrison Barnes with 20, and post a season-high 38 assists on 47 made field goals.

Fox said the ball movement reflects the Spurs’ up-tempo attack.

“You kind of see the assists pile up when you play that way,” he said. “We’re just trying to get out in transition on a make or miss. I think we have the best offense in the league right now after misses, but we want to be able to up that. We want to be able to up that after makes as well.”

Barnes said he thinks the best is yet to come for Fox, who missed all of training camp and the first eight games of the season with a hamstring injury.

“I think this is maybe his fifth game back and he didn’t have training camp, so there’s still the process of him getting his legs underneath him,” Barnes said. “But he is starting to get in form. As the season goes on, he’s just going to get better and better.”

Popovich ‘absolutely tremendous’ at Trinity appearance

Gregg Popovich’s sidekick at last week’s Trinity University conference for future healthcare leaders gave the marquee attraction high marks for his presentation to the students.

“Pop was absolutely tremendous,” Sean Elliott said.

The former Spurs star was on the stage Thursday night with the Hall of Famer, who retired from coaching in May after suffering a stroke last November.

Popovich headlined the event, which Trinity billed as a “conversation on leadership, teamwork and culture” for Healthcare Administration students and Methodist Healthcare residents.

“It was fun to sit down with him and see him interact with all the young people,” Elliott said. "He told a lot of stories and talked about a lot of things that were behind the scenes, some things I knew about and some things I didn’t.

“So, it was just as interesting for me as it was for a lot of the people there.”

Elliott said Popovich also “passed along a ton of great advice to all the young people.”

“He handled it well,” Elliott added.

Elliott said it was “fun to see” Popovich’s trademark wit remains sharp.

“He had a lot of energy,” Elliott said.

Popovich, 76, is the NBA’s all-time winningest coach. He continues to serve as the Spurs president of basketball operations.
