3 Takeaways as De’Aaron Fox and the Wemby-less Spurs bounce back

Image
San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) drives on Sacramento Kings’ guard Keon Ellis (23) during the first half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025. Fox led the Spurs with 28 points to help San Antonio beat Sacramento 123-110.

A little more than an hour before tipoff, Sacramento coach Doug Christie received word the Spurs would be without star Victor Wembanyama for Sunday’s afternoon matinee at the Frost Bank Center.

In a sense, it meant Christie traded one headache for another.

What did Wembanyama’s absence change for the Kings?

“The whole damn scout,” Christie said with a laugh.

Two former Kings – De’Aaron Fox and Harrison Barnes – combined to help the Spurs survive a distinct lack of Wembanyama, helping to lead the Spurs to a 123-110 victory.

Fox set season bests in points (28) and assists (11), bouncing back from a tough ending in Friday’s home loss to Golden State in which he missed a potential game-winning jumper at the buzzer.

Barnes added 20 points to a list of seven players to finish in double figures, as the Spurs led from early in the first quarter on.

Luke Kornet started for Wembanyama, who was out with calf tightness, and contributed 13 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks. Keldon Johnson added 14 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

The Spurs’ injury woes worsened in the first half, when starting guard Stephon Castle exited the game with left hip soreness.

DeMar DeRozan scored 27 points to pace the Kings, who dropped to 3-11. Domantas Sabonis chipped in 17 points and 13 rebounds.

Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s victory, which snapped a two-game skid for the Spurs, who improved to 9-4:

1. Wemby insurance policies pay off

When Wembanyama was out last season, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson didn’t have many options at his disposal to replace him.

One of the focuses of the front office over the offseason was to add size behind their 7-foot-4 star, signing the 7-1 Kornet from Boston and trading with Washington for the 6-10 Kelly Olynyk.

Both players came up with important minutes with Wembanyama sidelined Sunday.

Kornet chipped in his second double-double of the season, and was instrumental in keeping Sabonis somewhat in check.

Olynyk added five points and eight assists in his fourth appearance of the season.

Those two combined with Jeremy Sochan – who absorbed some minutes as a small-ball center – to help the Spurs weather Wembanyama’s absence, at least for a day.

2. No revenge on Fox’s mind

Fox’s big bounce-back game came against his former team. It would be a misnomer to call it a “revenge game” for Fox.

“I know like one person on that coaching staff, they brought in guys that I didn’t play with,” said Fox, who was dealt to the Spurs in February after 7 ½ seasons with the Kings. “It doesn’t make sense for me to care.”

Fox said the feeling was different when he returned to Sacramento in March following last season’s trade. Fox’s best friend on the Kings, Keegan Murray, did not play Sunday while recovering from finger surgery.

His tightest connection in Sacramento might be with new Kings guard Dennis Schroeder, who is renting Fox’s old house in the California capital.

That is a headache in and of itself for Fox.

“He texted me, ‘We got to fix the pool heater’ or something,” Fox said. “Bro, it’s November. Why are you getting in the pool?”

3. DeRozan slowed in second half

After DeRozan peppered the Spurs for 18 points in the first half, making 8 of his 9 field goals, Johnson decided the best way to slow the NBA’s sixth-leading active scorer was to try to get the ball out of his hands.

The Spurs spent the second half throwing blitzes and double teams DeRozan’s way, begging some other Kings player to beat them.

No other Kings player could.

DeRozan ended with a fine final line, but was less of a factor in the second half.
