Why Victor Wembanyama’s blocked-shot streak might never end

Time was running out in the Spurs’ victory over Toronto on Monday, which meant time was running out on one of the more remarkable individual streaks in club history.

For the first time since January of 2024, Victor Wembanyama was in danger of going home without a blocked shot.

The 7-foot-4 Spurs center was keenly aware of that fact.

When the Raptors’ R.J. Barrett came tiptoeing into the paint with 3:59 to play, Wembanyama admits he was hunting that elusive rejection.

“But there’s also moments where I’m hunting blocks and I’ve got six,” Wembanyama said. “It’s my job.”

Wembanyama sent Barrett’s half-hearted floater flying, extending his blocked-shot streak to 89 games in a row.

Only three players in NBA history have posted longer streaks: Patrick Ewing (145), Dikembe Mutombo (116) and Mark Eaton (94).

If the 21-year-old Wembanyama’s string is ever stopped, it will likely be for the reason it nearly came to a halt against Toronto.

Opponents are shaking in their Nikes to even challenge him.

“Teams are literally just driving in there and not even shooting,” Spurs forward Harrison Barnes said. “It’s a credit to Victor and the presence he has.”

Indeed, on a night he nearly ended block-less, Wembanyama nevertheless turned in one of the most dominant defensive performances of his career.

On more than one occasion, a Toronto player drove into the paint and became so freaked out by the prospect of testing Wembanyama, he threw the ball out of bounds instead.

Shooters rushed and short-armed attempts with Wembanyama within the same zip code. It was almost as if he was blocking shots with his mind.

That was a big reason the Spurs were 35 points better than the Raptors in the minutes Wembanyama was on the floor.

“He definitely affects the game without having to block a shot,” Barnes said.

In this pocket-protector era of advanced analytics, Barnes suggested the NBA’s numbers geeks look into a statistic called “derailed drives.”

The man who would no doubt lead the free world in that category is unsurprisingly a fan of Barnes’ proposal.

“It’s a great idea,” Wembanyama said with a grin.

The Spurs’ rejuvenated, Wembanyama-led defense is a driving factor behind the club’s 4-0 start, which will be put to the test Thursday against Miami at the Frost Bank Center.

Entering Wednesday, the Spurs boasted the third-best defensive rating in the NBA behind a pair of fellow unbeaten teams in Oklahoma City and Chicago.

They lead the NBA in overall net rating, outscoring opponents by 15.6 points per 100 possessions.

The Spurs spent much of their offseason and training camp seeking to revamp a defense that has consistently ranked among the league’s worst in recent seasons.

The team hired defensive guru Sean Sweeney away from Dallas and gave him an associate head coach title precisely to provide juice on that side of the floor.

“His level of expertise, along with his experience, allows him to have a strong voice,” coach Mitch Johnson said. “We rely on his heavily for that.”

All statistical trends before Halloween automatically come with the asterisk of a small sample size. Still, the improvement has been noticeable for the Spurs on the defensive end.

The Heat, meanwhile, enter Thursday’s game at 3-1 thanks in part to a reimagined offense.

Early on, Miami is playing at one of the fastest paces in the NBA and running fewer pick-and-rolls than anyone in the league. It has resulted in the two highest point totals in the league so far this season – 146 against Memphis and 144 against Charlotte.

The Heat’s new-look offense is free-flowing and almost improvisational.

“I don’t think we ran a play today,” Miami’s All-Star forward, Bam Adebayo, told reporters after a victory over New York earlier this week.

Miami’s quasi pick-up style has created an equal opportunity offense teams have found difficult to defend. The Heat’s leading scorer through four games is a bench player, Norman Powell, who is averaging 24 points.

The Spurs have the advantage of facing a version of the Heat’s new offense during the preseason, in an exhibition they won 112-107.

It might help that the Spurs were afforded an extra practice day Wednesday to prepare for Miami’s take on the run-and-shoot.

Coaches did their best to simulate it on the practice floor.

“We’re practicing as if we’re playing Miami that day,” forward Julian Champagnie said.

Whatever defensive game plan the Spurs have cooked up Thursday, it is a safe bet Wembanyama will be at the epicenter of it.

It is also a safe bet his blocked-shot streak will live on. He is not the NBA’s top shot-blocker for three seasons running for nothing.

In 121 career games, Wembanyama has failed to record a block only twice.

The most recent came in a 130-108 victory at Detroit on Jan. 10, 2024 in which Wembanyama’s services were required for only 21 minutes. He made up for his lack of blocks that night by posting his first career triple-double.

Wembanyama is aware some teams are going to limit his shot-blocking opportunities simply by steering clear of him.

Let them, he says.

“It’s going to happen more and more,” Wembanyama said. “But there’s many more ways to impact a game.”
