Toronto Raptors forward Sandro Mamukelashvili (54) waves to cheering fans as he is welcomed back to the Frost Bank Center for the game between his new team and the San Antonio Spurs in San Antonio, Monday, Oct. 27, 2025.

As spectacular as Victor Wembanyama’s start to the season has been, a friend and former teammate believes the best is yet to come for the Spurs star.

“I think he’s just getting started,” Toronto’s Sandro Mamukelashvili said.

“He’s figuring it out,” the center/forward added. “Imagine once he figures it out.”

On the same day the NBA named him the Western Conference Player of the Week, Wembanyama spoiled Mamukelashvili’s return to the Frost Bank Center with another dominating double-double that fueled the Spurs’ 121-103 win over the Raptors on Monday night.

Logging 31 minutes in the second game of a back-to-back, Wembanyama amassed 24 points on a highly efficient 7 of 8 from the floor and 10 of 10 from the foul line. He also had 15 rebounds, four assists and one block en route to finishing a whopping plus-35.

“It’s the best way to help my team,” Wembanyama said of his efficiency. “Sometimes it’s easy to underestimate the value of turning down shots, and I’ve done a lot of work this summer to recognize the situation and when to take a shot and when to not, and to take the highest quality shots possible.”

In helping the Spurs improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2017, Wembanyama recorded his fourth consecutive double-double and hiked his season averages to 31.0 points on 60.3% shooting from the field, 13.8 rebounds, and a league-best 4.8 blocks.

“He’s been amazing,” Mamukelashvili said. “He’s using his size a lot more, driving harder, using his length, the extra step. Wemby’s Wemby. He’s fearless. He plays hard. And defensively, he kind of changes everybody’s idea. He’s going to muck up the whole paint so you don’t even want to drive.”

Mamukelashvili, who had five points, two assists and a steal in 17 minutes off the bench against his former team, believes it’s all coming together for the 21-year-old Frenchman in his third season in the NBA.

“I think the first two years were more of, ‘OK, this is what I want to do and this is how I’m going to do it,’ and kind of finding,” Mamukelashvili said. “He found it. I imagine he’s just going to keep me better, keep figuring out how he can get to where he wants to get and get physically stronger. This is just the beginning.”

Before battling his fellow European, the always affable Mamukelashvili enjoyed a warm greeting from his former team that included a pre-game video tribute before a sellout crowd of 18,354 that he recognized with a wave of his hand.

A team and fan favorite in his two-plus seasons with the Spurs, the native of the Eastern European country of Georgia signed a two-year, $5.5 million contract with the Raptors in July with the goal of gaining more playing time. Mamukelashvili made NBA history last March when he led the Spurs to a win over the New York Knicks by scoring 34 points in just 19 minutes, a record for the most points when playing fewer than 20 minutes.

The memorable performance came before a Frost Bank Center crowd that included Mamukelashvili’s good friend, rapper Flavor Flav.

“It was cool,” Mamukelashvili said of his homecoming reception. "I loved it. San Antonio is a special place for me and coming back was great. I got really close with everybody on the team and it was great seeing them. And I want to say thank you for the video. It was great. I probably will never forget it and I appreciate the organization for loving me - even though I’m not a star player.

“It kind of says a lot about them, about the organization that even if you come in, you’re a good guy, you play hard and you uphold the organization at the high standards, they show love.”

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said the “love” was well-deserved.

“He was one of the fan favorites, and all the guys in the locker room loved him too," Johnson said.

Now, Mamukelashvili is on his to becoming a popular figure in Toronto, one of the world’s most diverse cities.

“He is awesome,” Raptors coach Darko Rajakovic said. “Everybody in the organization loves him. He’s getting along with everybody. Our fans like him. There is a big Georgian population in Toronto. He enjoys being connected with them and there is a Georgian Orthodox church he goes to, so he likes being in the market there.”

Said Mamukelashvili, “There are a bunch of Georgian restaurants, a bunch of Georgians, and Toronto is really nice and there are an amazing group of guys on this team. Everybody here wants to win so bad.”

With the loss to the Spurs, the Raptors fell to 1-3, but Mamukelashvili sees better days ahead.

“Slow start, but it’s a process,” he said. “Nobody wins the championship after three games. Nobody makes the playoffs after three games. It’s just going to be a build up for us. Once we figure it out and click, it will be amazing.”
