Victor Wembanyama never felt so helpless. By the end of the night, he had seldom felt so encouraged.

Forty-three seconds into the overtime period Friday in New Orleans, Wembanyama picked up his sixth foul defending the Pelicans’ Derik Queen, disqualifying the Spurs’ All-Star from an NBA game for only the second time in his career.

Wembanyama was forced to watch the final 4:17 from the bench, which turned out to be the best seat in the Smoothie King Center from which to watch the end of the Spurs’ 120-116 victory.

“I really enjoyed it when it was over,” Wembanyama said. “Before that, it was stressful.”

Wembanyama fouled out with 29 points, 11 rebounds and nine blocks, then turned the game over to his teammates to win.

With free-agent signee Luke Kornet taking Wembanyama’s place in the middle of the defense and Stephon Castle making enough plays down the stretch on offense, the Spurs improved to 2-0 heading into Sunday’s home opener against Brooklyn.

“I trust them as much they as they trust me,” Wembanyama said. “I was confident.”

In a way, Friday’s victory was even more of a confidence-booster than the 125-92 blowout win at Dallas that kicked off the Spurs’ season two nights earlier.

The Spurs turned the game around in the fourth quarter with Wembanyama taking a breather as well, piecing together a 14-0 run that transformed an eight-point deficit into a six-point advantage.

“It shows growth,” said guard Devin Vassell, who finished with 23 points including a key 3-pointer in OT. “Over the past couple years, we probably would have lost that game. We’re trending in the right direction.”

The game also proved the value of Kornet, the 7-foot-1 center who signed a four-year, $41 million contract last summer to fill a hole as Wembanyama’s backup.

At times Friday, Kornet played in tandem with the Spurs’ 7-4 Frenchman. After Wembanyama fouled out, Kornet became the gatekeeper between the Pelicans and the rim.

“Everyone was just kind of dialed in and ready to step up,” said Kornet, who ended with 14 points and 12 rebounds. “Different guys at each point just sort of made the right play and were able to make shots, and we were fortunate enough to come out on the right side of it.”

Kornet earning ‘Bad Boy’ reputation

Through his first two games in a Spurs uniform, Kornet has packed the box score in more ways than one.

In the opener against Dallas, Kornet was whistled for a flagrant foul after smacking Anthony Davis across the head while attempting a block. Against the Pelicans, Kornet received a technical for clothes-lining Jordan Poole on a drive.

“I don’t know what happened,” Kornet said. “I’m a Bad Boy, I guess.”

Kornet vows to clean up his act going forward.

“Maybe there’s some angst I need to sit in prayer about and really reflect on,” Kornet said in jest. “See if there’s something that’s coming out during competition I didn’t know was there. Because it is crazy.”
