DALLAS – A little after midnight on what was now Thursday morning, the final Spurs’ bus sat idling in the loading dock of the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
The last and most important passenger was lying face down on the training table in the visitors’ locker room, finishing his much-deserved postgame rub down.
Eight months after a blood clot diagnosis caused Wembanyama to rethink everything about everything, the 21-year-old Spurs star unloaded a 40-point, 15-rebound, three-block opus in a 125-92 season-opening victory that more than made up for lost time.
“He’s been waiting for this longer than maybe anybody else,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “We saw him take the moment and play spectacular.”
As it often has been throughout Wembanyama’s brief-but-unprecedented NBA career, “spectacular” doesn’t seem a descriptive enough adjective.
Wembanyama finished the night with the most points for a Spurs player in a season-opener, topping the 39 posted by George Gervin in 1977.
In doing so, the 7-foot-4 Frenchman served notice to the rest of the NBA: He is back, and better than you remembered.
The Spurs, meanwhile, might be coming fast.
Next up: New Orleans, where the Spurs head for the second date of the Wembanyama Comeback Tour on Friday.
“We needed to make a statement in our locker room,” Wembanyama said after the beatdown of Dallas. “I feel like it’s time to take the next step. We’re all tired of losing, and that’s the truth.”

Wednesday marked the third season in a row the Spurs opened against the Mavericks.
This one went a bit differently than the previous two.
For the first time in his NBA career, Wembanyama begins a season 1-0. It was the Spurs’ first opening-night triumph since 2021.
With it, the Spurs put a gleeful damper on the debut of No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg in Dallas, much to the chagrin of a sold-out crowd of 20,122 who showed up to watch the future phenom struggle to 10 points and 10 rebounds on 4-of-13 shooting.
Make no mistake. The Spurs descended on Dallas fully expecting to spoil Flagg Day.
“It’s not really a surprise to us, knowing the work we put in all summer,” said guard Stephon Castle, who proved a steady Wemby wingman with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists. “We’ve been seeing it for a minute now.”
“And,” Castle added, “we’ve got Victor Wembanyama on the team, too.”
That, clearly, is the most important variable in the equation.
The enduring highlight of Wembanyama’s third season opener came in the second quarter, when he needed only one dribble to cover 18 feet and complete a reverse dunk that included a foul on Anthony Davis, Dallas’ All-Star forward.
Or maybe it was the spinning, 180-degree alley-oop he finished off a lob from Castle.
Or maybe it was the dancing, dribbling, pull-up 3-pointer from the top of the arc in the third quarter, the one that turned into a four-point play as Dereck Lively II fouled him.
That last one put the Spurs ahead 71-59. The rout was on.
“I think he’s the best player in the league,” Castle said of Wembanyama. “I expect that from him no matter who is really matched up against him. If you don’t send two at him, you’re probably in trouble.”
Even then, you might be in trouble.
With 5:28 remaining in the fourth quarter, Wembanyama spun out of a double-team on the right baseline and swished an easy-does-it jumper.
That basket put him at 40 points. It put the Spurs ahead by 30.
The goal now for the Spurs is to keep the hype train in check as it steams into New Orleans.
“We just can’t get complacent,” said rookie Dylan Harper, the No. 2 pick who had 15 points in his NBA debut. “This is one game out of 82. We got a good win, and I think we showed the world what we’re capable of.”
For Wembanyama, Wednesday’s eruption was eight months in the making.
It was his first appearance in an NBA game that counted since a Feb. 12 loss at Boston, just before the start of last season’s All-Star break.
After the game, Wembanyama was asked how he prepared his mind and body to return to the court after the forced layoff.
“The mind I’m not worried about,” Wembanyama said. “I saw what it’s like to be confronted with potentially losing a lot, whether it’s your career or your health. I’m not taking this for granted."
As for his body?
“I’m having more fun now that I’m not struggling to move as much,” Wembanyama said. “And I’m still going to get better.”
A scary thought indeed for the rest of the NBA.

In one late timeout huddle Wednesday, as the Spurs were pulling away, Johnson implored his players to “embrace the mundane.”
The message was clear. The Spurs’ coach wanted his players to stick to the boring, old fundamentals that were going to bring the victory home.
One problem with that. When it comes to Wembanyama, mundane is a fool’s errand.
Just ask his teammates.
As the locker room opened to the media after Wednesday’s Wembanyama-fueled victory, Spurs forward Keldon Johnson came armed with a query of his own.
It was one everyone in the building had been asking themselves for the previous two hours.
“Honest question,” Johnson said. “Have you ever seen some (bleep) like that in your life?”
