DALLAS — Up until Wednesday, Victor Wembanyama might as well have been a figure of Cooper Flagg’s imagination.

“I’ve obviously seen tape,” said Flagg, the Dallas rookie who was the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. “I’ve never seen him play in person or even seen him in person, but from what the guys have told me he’s kind of something you’ve never seen before, and you can’t really understand that until you see him in person.”

Flagg’s first NBA game coincided with his initial first-hand look at the Spurs’ 7-foot-4 superstar.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Wembanyama next haunts the Mavericks’ dreams.

Wembanyama wowed with 40 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks as the Spurs rolled to a 125-92 victory at the American Airlines Center.

It marked the third season in a row Wembanyama and the Spurs opened against the Mavericks.

This one went differently than the other two.

Stephon Castle added 22 points for the Spurs, who broke the game open with a 22-9 run in the third quarter.

Anthony Davis scored 22 to lead the Mavericks, but mostly found himself on the wrong end of Wembanyama’s highlight tape. The game was billed as a showdown between the NBA’s top two draft choices, Flagg and the Spurs’ Dylan Harper.

Both ballyhooed rookies took a while to find their footing. After a scoreless first half, Flagg finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Harper shook off a shaky start to finish with 15 points.

The night, however, belonged to Wembanyama, whose array of dunks, jumpers and — yes, even post moves — dazzled even the partisan crowd in Dallas.

As Flagg can attest now, Wembanyama is both real and spectacular.

Here are three takeaways from the Spurs’ rousing win over the Mavs, which moved them to 1-0 for the first time since 2021:

1. Wemby more than made up for lost time

It was Wembanyama’s first regular-season game since last February, when a blood clot issue shelved his second NBA season.

He put that pent-up energy to good use. The enduring highlight came in the second quarter, when Wembanyama needed one dribble to cover 18 feet and finish a reverse dunk that included a foul on Davis.

There was also the 180-degree reverse alley oop slam off a pass from Castle. And a 4-point play, again at the expense of Dereck Lively in the third.

Wembanyama had 11 points out of the gate in the first quarter, wasting few minutes making up for lost time.

There was no stopping him from there. Wembanyama ended up posting the most points by a Spurs player in a season opener, breaking the previous record of 39 set by George Gervin in 1977.

2. Castle’s Rookie of the Year encore off to good start

Were it not for Wembanyama’s explosion, the basketball world would be talking about Castle and his leap.

The Spurs’ starting point guard was often the second-best player on the floor Wednesday after Wembanyama. He was a big reason Flagg struggled through the first half without a point.

Last year’s NBA Rookie of the Year is primed for a big sophomore season.

3. Both Dylan Harper and Cooper Flagg will see better days

Nerves got the best of both high-profile rookies to begin the game Wednesday.

Flagg was 0-for-2 with a pair of turnovers in the first half. Harper came off the bench in the first quarter and immediately went 0-for-3 with a pair of turnovers.

Harper finally got on the board with a coast-to-coast dunk with 3:51 remaining in the first half — one he nearly missed. Flagg came off a curl on Dallas’ first play the third quarter to bury a jumper for his first NBA points.

Both rookies found their legs eventually, and there are better days ahead for each of them.
