Spurs seek to finish preseason undefeated, close out strong vs. Pacers
San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama (1) gets congratulation from San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson in a Spurs preseason opener vs. Guangzhou Loong-Lions on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025 at Frost Bank Center.
The Spurs have a shot at closing out a preseason undefeated for the first time in franchise history.
With a win over the Pacers on Friday night in the exhibition finale, the Spurs can improve to 5-0 in the preseason for the first time since 1997-98 when they finished with a 7-1 mark.
The Spurs were also 5-0 in 1978-79 when they finished 6-2.
But the chance to make history won’t be the Spurs’ top priority when they take the court at the Frost Bank Center for the 7 p.m. game.
“We just want to continue to build some continuity, some chemistry,” Champagnie said. “We’ve been doing a pretty good job with that as it is, so we just want to continue on that trend and focus in on defense.”
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson rates his first training camp as the team’s coach a success because of their nose to the grindstone daily approach.
“We feel good about the work we’ve put in,” he said. “We’ve had some things that we wanted to do in camp, and we feel like we’ve worked hard at achieving those. What that produces, I’m not sure, but I think we feel like we’ve tried to put energy in the right places.”
One big goal has been to establish a rugged defensive identity. While they’ve made strides, Johnson indicated there is still work to be done in that area.
“That’s an area that we will continue to have to grow in,” he said. “But I do think the intentions are there.”
From a chemistry standpoint, Johnson said he’s pleased with the leadership exhibited by the team’s young veterans.

“There’s been a level of assertiveness from some of the guys that have been here for a few years, guys like Julian, Keldon and Devin (Vassell), some of those guys who have been here for three, four, five, six-plus years,” he said. “They know how we want to operate, and they know the foundation that’s been here for a long time. To have that consistency and continuity has been really positive.”
