Victor Wembanyama is averaging nearly 5.0 assists per game in the preseason against nearly 5.0 turnovers.
His teammates expect the former number to continue in the regular season while the latter diminishes.
“As far as him being a distributor, I feel like he’ll do an amazing job,” forward Keldon Johnson said after practice Thursday. “He’ll put us in great spots to be successful. He’s our guy.”
In his injury-shortened 2024-25 season, Wembanyama averaged nearly 4.0 assists against 3.2 turnovers over 46 games. His teammates expect him to be an even better playmaker this year.
“He’s gotten a lot better,” forward Julian Champagnie said. "He’s been making really good decisions. Even the mistakes he makes, they’re selfless. They’re not mistakes where he’s trying to make a hundred-point play or anything like that. He’s trying to pass the ball, get it to the open guy and that’s stuff you want to see, especially as a teammate.
“He wants to pass the ball, he wants to win. He wants everybody to be involved and we got to do a good job of helping him get there.”
Johnson said turnovers come when you handle the ball as much as Wembanyama does.
“He’s going to have the ball, and it is never just on Vic, it’s on all of us,” Johnson said. We just need to put ourselves in better positions so that when he is double-teamed or when he is playing in a crowd, we are there for the outlets."
In Monday’s 124-108 win at Indiana, Wembanyama finished with four assists and seven turnovers.
“The good thing about it is the season hasn’t started yet, so we are going through those things now,” Johnson said. “We had a couple turnovers. Who cares? We look at the film, come into practice, keep drilling it out, and we just try to correct that. So, that’s all.”
And with Wembanyama’s desire for excellence, things can only get better, his teammates believe.
“He’s one of the hardest workers,” Johnson said. “I have no worries about Vic having the ball, making plays for us. He understands the game. He watches film, he works his butt off.”
