Spurs’ Julian Champagnie out to create space for slashing guards

San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30) shoots over Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley (4) during the second half of their NBA game at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Friday, April 4, 2025. Champagnie is off to a hot start from deep in the preseason after a prolific year from beyond the arc in 2024-25.
Julian Champagnie’s job within the Spurs’ offensive scheme is to create space with his 3-point shooting.
On Wednesday night in the Spurs’ 112-107 preseason win at Miami, he created a galaxy’s worth of it.

Fueled by a red-hot 5-for-5 start, the 6-foot-7 forward hit 5 of 7 from beyond the arc in a 15-point performance the Spurs hope is a sign of things to come as they seek to open up the floor for their trio of rim-attacking guards: De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle and rookie Dylan Harper.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson believes Champagnie is more than up to the task of assisting the team’s downhill racers. He’ll be looking for more outside shooting from the New York City native when the Spurs (2-0) face Utah (0-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at the Frost Bank Center.
“Julian’s been with us a few years,” Johnson said. “He’s pretty clear what his role is and he’s playing within himself, and you get rewarded for that sometimes and the ball finds you — Lady Luck, basketball gods, this and that. And he’s just playing very consistent right now.”
Said forward Harrison Barnes, who worked out with Champagnie this summer in Los Angeles, “He’s been great. He worked really hard this summer and put himself in great position to come into this season in shape and ready to play with confidence. You’re seeing the result of that hard work.”
Champagnie said his hot hand against the Heat all had to do with his familiarity with his teammates and vice versa. He misfired from deep for the first time four minutes into the third period.
“That was an effect of me knowing how guys want to play and just spacing and making myself available for them to pass whenever they doubled Vic (Wembanyama) or whoever else, Devin (Vassell), Keldon (Johnson),” he said. “It’s just a KYP — know your personnel — type of deal.”
Entering his third full season with the Spurs after they claimed him off waivers from Philadelphia in mid-February 2023, Champagnie is coming off a season in which he connected on 37.1% from deep on a career-best 5.9 attempts per game. He believes he can do even better this season as defenses face a pick-your-poison situation against the Spurs.
“With De’Aaron Fox, Vic, Dylan Harper, who hasn’t played yet, Steph, and I would consider Devin in that group along with KJ, we have a lot of guys who can put pressure on the rim, and it is going to force teams to say we’re either going to collapse and guard that, or we’re going to guard the three,” Champagnie said. “So, it’s nice to have that variety of shooting, plus attacking. It should be fun. It will be a good mix.”

Champagnie isn’t the only member of the Spurs’ Space Force. Harrison Barnes, who led the Spurs in 3-point accuracy last season with a career-best 43.3% effort; Lindy Waters III, a 36.6% shooter for his career; Kelly Olynyk, who hit 41.8% of his attempts last season; Vassell, who connected on 36.8% last season; and possibly rookie Carter Bryant, who shot 37.1% last season as a freshman at Arizona, can all open things up.
“With the shooters we have, with me, Julian, HB, Lindy, it’s going to be hard to key in on De’Aaron, Vic, Steph, all of our guys that can get to the basket,” Vassell said. “You can’t just key on one person when you’ve got shooters that can spread it out.”
Like Champagnie, Waters has looked good in the preseason firing away from outside. He sank 3 of 4 on Wednesday en route to 11 points after hitting 3 of 5 for nine points in Monday’s 119-88 win over China’s Guangzhou Loong-Lions.
“That’s my bread and butter, being able to shoot and spread the floor, so I’m going to keep working on that and keep showing it,” Waters said.
Champagnie plans on doing the same.
“I’m a spacer, so my job is to make sure that those guys have all the space they need to attack and create and do all that kind of stuff,” he said. “I think it will all come together pretty well.”
