Spurs’ Julian Champagnie making presence felt on rebounding tear

Lakers center Jaxson Hayes (11) pulls down the rebound around teammatesDalton Knecht (4), Spurs center Luke Kornet (7) and Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30) during the second quarter at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026.
When Spurs forward Julian Champagnie was asked in the locker room about his emergence as a double-double threat due to his increased emphasis on crashing the boards, teammate Kelly Olynyk teasingly suggested he’s benefiting from other players doing the dirty work.
Champagnie readily agreed.

San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30) and forward Victor Wembanyama (1) fight for a rebound with Houston Rockets center Steven Adams (12) during the first half of an NBA game in San Antonio, Friday, Nov. 7, 2025. San Antonio beat Houston 121-110.
“They box out, and I get the rebounds,” he said.
While there’s some truth to that playing on a team that includes 7-foot-4 Victor Wembanyama and 7-1 Luke Kornet, Champagnie also deserves plenty of credit for the way he has responded to a challenge issued to him by Spurs assistant coach Matt Nielsen.
“Me and Mattie, we have this little thing where he challenged me to get more rebounds and be a little more active,” Champagnie said.
The 6-7 fourth-year pro corralled 11 of them to go along with 13 points in Thursday night’s 119-101 win over Milwaukee.
It was his seventh double-double of the season, third in the last four games and fourth in the last seven after he entered the season with just one in the first 173 games of his career.
It also marked the 10th time this season he led the Spurs in rebounding. Only Wembanyama (19) has done it more often. Champagnie also had the most rebounds by any player in Thursday’s game, no small feat considering Wembanyama came in averaging a team-high 11.0 and the Bucks’ 6-11 Giannis Antetokounmpo 9.7.

San Antonio Spurs forward Julian Champagnie (30) rebounds the ball over Cleveland Cavaliers forward Dean Wade (32) during the first half of an NBA game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, Dec. 29, 2025.
“His rebounding, I don’t know how long back, but it’s been pretty dang consistent now,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said of Champagnie, who is averaging a career-best 6.3 boards for the season.
Champagnie gets a lot of attention for his 3-point shooting, and rightfully so. Who can forget the franchise-record 11 shots from beyond the arc he sank in the win over New York on Dec. 31 en route to a career-high 36 points?
But his teammates and coaches also appreciate how he’s developed into a strong rebounder.
“He’s been extremely valuable for us in that aspect,” guard De’Aaron Fox said.
“The most impressive part is he’s been rebounding even when he has not made shots,” Johnson said. “That’s when you become a real player in this league on a competitive team. You have to bring a certain amount of skills to the table every single night. And shot-making is just typically not one you can bank on because of the volatility and percentages. And so to be able to add something like (rebounding) is very impactful.”
Champagnie insists he’s just benefiting from his teammates doing the dirty work.
“Shout out to all the guys just boxing out, because if they’re not boxing out, I’m not going to get all of them,” he said.
