(Victor Wembanyama)

(Harrison Barnes)

(Julian Champagnie)

(Keldon Johnson)

(Lindy Waters III)

(Luke Kornet)

评分:A-

(Carter Bryant)

(Adam Flagler)

(David Jones Garcia)

(Riley Minix)

(Harrison Ingram)

(Micah Potter)

(Bismack Biyombo)

(Stanley Umude)

(Mitch Johnson)

Grades: San Antonio Spurs vs. Guangzhou Loong-Lions – Preseason Game #1

The San Antonio Spurs tipped off 2025-26 summer league action with a home game versus the Guangzhou Loong-Lions. After a relatively slow start, the Spurs were able to waltz to a 119-88 victory.

Given the lack of competition, it’d be unwise to make any determinations based on what transpired. That said, it was great to see the Silver and Black back in action.

Stats: Spurs vs. Loong-Lions

Spurs vs. Loong-Lions – Final Grades

Victor Wembanyama

Wembanyama was a bit loose in his return to the basketball court, as evidenced by his six turnovers in 16 minutes. But, uh, yeah, the guy nearly had a triple-double in 16 minutes so it’s difficult to be too upset. He looks notably stronger since the last time we saw him play. Above all, though, his passing and his overall unselfishness really stood out. If Wembanyama becomes an elite passer on top of everything else … wow.

Grade: B+

Harrison Barnes

Barnes missed all three of his field goal attempts and was mostly stationary on defense — but he looked fine athletically. He had a couple coordinated forays to the hoop so it’s safe to say he didn’t let himself go over the summer.

Grade: C

Julian Champagnie

With Wembanyama drawing so much attention, Champagnie found himself open quite a bit. The hired gun hit enough shots to make the Chinese team pay.

Grade: B+

Keldon Johnson

Johnson doesn’t look as slim as he did at the beginning of last season. However, that’s not necessarily bad news because he played better last season after he put meat back on his bones. It’s not surprising that the Loong-Loins had no hope of dealing with Johnson’s physicality.

Grade: B+

Lindy Waters III

Waters didn’t look totally out of place at point guard. That should help his chances to make the team. Being the emergency fourth or fifth point guard adds a little bit to his value. Waters’ main attribute though is his shooting. Against Guangzhou, he started things off by hitting his first three shots from the field.

Grade: B

Luke Kornet

The most interesting storyline from this preseason opener is how well Kornet and Wembanyama played together. The two bigs even ran some pick-and-roll sets — and it looked unstoppable. But, yeah, before we can confidently say this pairing will work, we need to see how it looks against a real NBA team. Against this Chinese team, Kornet was basically unstoppable when playing next to Wembanyama because they didn’t have enough size to deal with both of them.

Grade: A-

Carter Bryant

What we saw in summer league from Bryant carried over to his exhibition play debut. He has great size, he’s extremely mobile and his motor is relentless. He makes some tactical mistakes here and there but his defensive potential is clearly phenomenal. Offensively, Bryant’s athleticism was a weapon that was especially deadly in transition. While the lottery pick hit only one three-pointer, it was a good sign that he kept shooting with confidence.

Grade: B+

Adam Flagler

Flagler ran plays reasonably well. His lack of size is glaring, though. And his jumper wasn’t as smooth as you’d expect from someone his size who is trying to make it in the league.

Grade: C+

David Jones Garcia

In summer league, Jones Garcia was mostly about scoring. Against the Loong-Lions, the native of the Dominican Republic concentrated more on passing and defense. The results were mixed at times but he did well to show he may be more multi-dimensional than advertised.

Grade: B

Riley Minix

The good: Minix has a silky smooth shooting stroke. His feel for the game is also high. The bad: Minix doesn’t move well and that limits his defensive ceiling and his ability to get to the paint and finish.

Grade: B-

Harrison Ingram

Ingram had more than his share of mistakes but there were also flashes. That said, those flashes seemed to mostly be due to the opponent’s lack of bulk in the middle. We’ll see if Ingram can show anything against genuine NBA squads.

Grade: C+

Micah Potter

Potter looks like he’s in really good shape and there’s nothing too wrong with his shooting stroke. However, he’s still a big-time longshot to make the team.

Grade: C+

Bismack Biyombo

With Kornet showing promise already, any hope of Biyombo being anything more than a deep, deep bench big has already vanished.

Grade: B-

Stanley Umude

Umude plays hard and plays smart. He’ll be interesting to watch in Austin.

Grade: B

Mitch Johnson

Johnson put Wembanyama in interesting positions and balanced the minutes well. With so many players missing the game and the low level of competition, we didn’t get too much of a read on what Johnson may be planning to change this season.
