LAS VEGAS - Backup big man Charles Bassey, an unrestricted free agent after three injury-plagued seasons with the Spurs, is getting an audition with the Boston Celtics during the Las Vegas Summer League.
Bassey, who played high school ball at St. Anthony in San Antonio, had 14 points and 11 rebounds to help the Celtics claim a 92-78 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday in their Vegas opener.
Bassey told reporters after the game he joined Boston for Summer League at the “last minute” after getting a call from his agent.
“It’s been good,” he said, adding that the Celtics’ “culture” prompted him to sign a training camp deal with the team.
In 18 minutes off the bench, Bassey also registered two blocks and hit 7 of 8 from the field.
Bassey averaged 4.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 10.4 minutes over 36 games last season. The fourth-year pro returned to the Spurs last October after a 10-month absence due to a torn left ACL he suffered in a G League game in December 2023. He fractured a patella in the same knee in March 2023 and missed the final 14 games of the 2022-23 season.
Bassey played in just two of the Spurs’ final 27 games last season due to a sprained MCL and a bone bruise in his left knee.
The Spurs shored up their lack of depth behind All-Star center Victor Wembanyama this week by signing former Celtics backup center Luke Kornet and by acquiring journeyman center Kelly Olynyk in a trade with Washington.
