Spurs thin at backup center after Bassey suffers another knee injury

ATLANTA – The Spurs faced Atlanta on Wednesday night without a true backup center after Charles Bassey suffered a knee injury in Monday’s loss at Memphis.

The Spurs ruled Bassey out because of a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. After trading another reserve big, Zach Collins, to Chicago on Monday, the Spurs will be forced to use either Jeremy Sochan and Harrison Barnes, both forwards, as backups to Victor Wembanyama at center.

The Spurs are hopeful Bassey can return after the All-Star break when they return to action on Feb. 20 against Phoenix in Austin. If that’s the case, he will have been sidelined for five games.

“It’s day-to-day, probably seven to 10 days, a week,” Bassey said of how long he expects to be out. “I’m just glad it’s short term and nothing long-term. My energy’s up right now, so I’m positive and I’m going to be back the same.”

Bassey’s injured knee is the same one that required surgery last year after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in December 2023 while playing in a game for the Spurs’ G League affiliate in Austin.

The fourth-year big man returned to the court during the preseason in October after a 10-month absence.

Bassey suffered his latest knee injury in a collision with Memphis’ Jake LaRavia with 8:27 left in the 128-109 loss to the Grizzlies. He sank a pair of free throws after LaRavia was whistled for a foul but was forced to exit the game for good less than a minute later.

“I had flashbacks,” Bassey said, referring to the more serious injury he suffered in the G League.

Bassey finished Monday’s game with four points and two rebounds in seven minutes. For the season, he is averaging 4.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 0.9 blocks in 10.8 minutes over 32 games.

Point guard Chris Paul didn’t participate in shootaround Wednesday after the Spurs listed him as questionable with a sprained left index finger.

Castle to play on Mullin’s Rising Stars team

Spurs rookie Stephon Castle learned Tuesday he will play for Chris Mullin’s team during the Rising Stars competition at All-Star Weekend in San Francisco.

Castle’s teammates will be the Los Angeles Lakers’ Dalton Knecht, Memphis’ Jaylen Wells, Utah’s Keyonte George, Memphis’ Zach Edey, Golden State’s Trayce Jackson-Davis and Phoenix’s Ryan Dunn.

Honorary coaches Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Mullin selected seven players from the pool of 21 rookies and sophomores. Former New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin will lead the team of seven players representing the NBA G League.

The NBA’s annual showcase of premier young talent is set for 8 p.m. Feb. 14 at Chase Center.

Wembanyama’s All-Star Weekend gets busier

In addition to playing in the All-Star tournament on Feb. 16, Wembanyama is scheduled to participate in the skills competition with Paul on Feb. 15 at Chase Center.

“That’s going to be a lot of fun,” Wembanyama said of his busy All-Star Weekend.

Castle will also be busy. In addition to the Rising Stars, the fourth overall pick will represent the Spurs in the dunk contest Feb. 15.

“I’m particularly excited to see Steph, what he’s going to do,” Wembanyama said.
