Bassey entered Tuesday’s game with 5:21 remaining in the third quarter. He logged 10 minutes, finishing with four points and four rebounds.
“I was a little bit nervous,” said Bassey, who spent part of his high school career at St. Anthony in San Antonio. “I didn’t know how I was going to feel or if I was going to play, but I felt good.”

It has been a long road back for Bassey, who underwent surgery to repair his left knee on Dec. 15. He is likely to get a bit more run Thursday, as the Spurs conclude their preseason slate in Houston.
The 23-year-old Bassey was predictably out of sync early in his third-quarter shift in Miami. He finally felt himself after finishing a dunk off a pass from Stephon Castle late in the fourth.
“I’m still a little rusty, but that is going to come with time,” Bassey said. “I felt like the dunk was it. In my mind, I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m back.’ ”
Spurs give Spo an Olympic reunion
Miami coach Erik Spoelstra used the occasion of Tuesday’s game to say hello to a couple of familiar Spurs faces he remembers from the summer.
One was Wembanyama, who led Team France on a silver-medal run at the Paris Olympics that culminated with a hard-fought loss against Team USA in the final game. Spoelstra was an assistant under Steve Kerr, who led the American squad.
“What we saw in the Olympics was, in the biggest moments is when he played his best, including our final game,” Spoelstra said. “That was his best game.”
Spoelstra also caught up with Spurs assistant Mitch Johnson, who likewise served on Kerr’s staff in Paris. Johnson, who joined coach Gregg Popovich’s roster of assistants in 2019, is beginning to make a name for himself across the NBA.
“You can see why Pop has given him a lot more responsibility as the years have gone on,” Spoelstra said. “He is a very effective communicator and coach on the floor. He has a lot of great ideas. Pop trusts him, and that carries a lot of weight.”
