Spurs hire assistant Sean Sweeney away from Dallas
Highly regarded Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Sean Sweeney is set to become Mitch Johnson’s new lead assistant with the San Antonio Spurs.
Sean Sweeney, a highly regarded assistant with the Dallas Mavericks, has agreed to a deal to become new Spurs coach Mitch Johnson’s associate coach in San Antonio.
Sweeney joined Jason Kidd’s staff in Dallas in 2021, after previously working under Kidd in Milwaukee and Brooklyn. In between stints with Kidd, Sweeney spent three seasons in Detroit under Dwane Casey from 2018 to 2021.
A graduate of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., Sweeney got his start in the NBA as a video coordinator with the New Jersey Nets under P.J. Carlesimo and Avery Johnson, both of whom have Spurs ties.
The hiring of Sweeney signals a change in how the Spurs’ staff operated last season, when Johnson was named acting coach following Gregg Popovich’s stroke in November.
The Spurs did not have a designated lead assistant at the time, with veteran aides Brett Brown, Matt Neilsen and newcomer Mike Noyes working as something of a collaborative.
Sweeney’s arrival comes with a pay bump from his days in Dallas, as well as an elevated role as lead assistant. He has applied for several head coaching gigs in recent years, and was a finalist for the Phoenix job that went to first-timer Jordan Ott this summer.
In San Antonio, Sweeney stands to be a part of a revamped staff that also includes former NBA player Corliss Williamson, who last week agreed to join Johnson’s bench as an assistant.
It is not immediately certain how many members of last season’s staff will return heading into the 2025-26 campaign.
