The Spurs aren’t wasting any time putting Mitch Johnson front and center as their new head coach.

Johnson will be on the stage in front of the ESPN cameras when the results of the NBA draft lottery are announced next Monday night at Chicago’s McCormick Place Convention Center, a team spokesperson said.

General manager Brian Wright will represent the team in the drawing room, which will occur before the broadcast starts at 6 p.m.

Wright was on the stage last year when NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum revealed the results of the lottery, which included the Spurs winning the Nos. 4 and 8 overall picks. The Spurs representative in the drawing room in 2024 was Brandon Leibsohn, their senior manager of basketball strategy and legal affairs.

Wright was in the drawing room when the Spurs won the lottery in 2023, which allowed them to select French phenom Victor Wembanyama No. 1 overall. Spurs managing partner Peter J. Holt represented the club on the stage that year.

Wembanyama won Rookie of the Year, an honor Stephon Castle also claimed this year after the Spurs selected him fourth overall in 2024. The Spurs used the eighth pick last year to select Rob Dillingham, who they promptly traded to Minnesota for a 2031 unprotected first-round pick and a protected 2030 pick swap.

The Spurs introduced Johnson as the franchise’s 19th head coach Monday after Gregg Popovich ended his historic, championship-studded 29-year run as head coach.

Johnson, 38, served as acting head coach last season after Popovich, 76, suffered a mild stroke five games into the season.

While Johnson will be the face of the franchise in Chicago, he said his main concern this offseason will be on player development.

“Brian and the rest of the (scouting) group will do the due diligence they do and then we will discuss things and be on the same page and aligned as we always are,” Johnson said. “But I think my sweat, equity and time will be devoted to these current guys right here and continue to get them as improved as we can.”

And he hopes to facilitate that improvement through some hands-in coaching.

“From Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle to Harrison Ingram, Riley Minix and David Duke, the goal for us to get those and maximize every opportunity we can this offseason to get them better,” Johnson said. “And that can be on the court, that can be in the film room, that could be through walking through situations, that can be by watching the playoff games. And I hope to be at the forefront of that in a lot of ways. I hope to be in the trenches on the court with those guys, helping them get better the rest of our staff.”

But for now Johnson’s focus might be on packing a few lucky charms with him for the trip to Chicago as they hope to add more talent in the hopes of ending their club-record six-year playoff drought next season.

The Spurs enter the June draft with two lottery picks, including the one obtained from Atlanta in the Dejounte Murray trade in summer 2022. The Spurs’ own pick has the eighth-best odds in the drawing, while the one obtained from the Hawks possesses the 14th-best odds.

Between the two, the Spurs have a 29.7% chance of landing at least one in the top four. Their chances of drawing the top pick – and the opportunity to draft former Duke forward Cooper Flagg – sit at 6.7%.

If they land in the top four, the Spurs will also eye point guard Dylan Harper, a xx Rutgers-ex; guard/forward Ace Bailey, a xx from Rutgers; and VJ Edgecombe, a x-x guard from Baylor.

The Spurs entered the offseason in need of a backup to the 7-foot-3 Wembanyama and outside shooters who can spread the floor for the All-Star center. Prospects who could fill those needs include 7-2 former Duke center Khaman Maluach, x-x Illinois combo guard Kasparas Jakucionis, Illinois, 6-7 former Duke forward Kon Knueppel and 6-6 former Texas guard Tre Johnson.

Wright, Johnson and Co. will look to talk to Flagg and study other prospects at the combine, which started Sunday and runs through this week.
