Stephon Castle named Rookie of the Year as Spurs go back-to-back

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephon Castle (5) looks to make a play while being guarded by Charlotte Hornets guard Josh Green (10) during an NBA game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, on Friday, March 14, 2025.

The NBA’s Rookie of the Year trophy is staying in San Antonio.

Spurs guard Stephon Castle has officially won the 2025 award, joining Victor Wembanyama to give the Spurs back-to-back rookies of the year.

The winner was chosen by a global panel of 100 media members covering the league, with the results announced Tuesday as part of the TNT’s NBA playoffs pregame show.

Unlike Wembanyama, Castle was not the league’s unanimous Rookie of the Year. But he got close.

Castle earned 92 first-place votes and 482 ballot points. Atlanta’s Zaccharie Risacher finished second with five first-place votes and 245 ballot points, while Memphis’ Jaylen Wells came in third with three first-place votes and 123 ballot points.

It was a golden moment Castle said he would not allow himself to savor until it came Tuesday.

“Coming in with the confidence I had in myself as a player, this was definitely a goal of mine from Day 1,” Castle said on the TNT broadcast. “I’m happy to be able to execute it.”

Drafted fourth overall out of Connecticut, the 20-year-old Castle finished his first NBA season averaging 14.7 points – most among rookies – while adding 4.1 assists and 3.7 rebounds in 81 games.

The 6-foot-6 Castle also emerged as one of the Spurs’ most reliable defenders.

With Wembanyama and star guard De’Aaron Fox out for the season down the homestretch, Castle took his game to another level.

Over the final 30 games, Castle averaged 22.3 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists per 36 minutes of playing time. Only three players have hit those per-minute averages over a full season before the age of 21: LeBron James, Luka Doncic and LaMelo Ball.

Castle is the fourth Spurs player to be tabbed Rookie of the Year, joining David Robinson, Tim Duncan and Wembanyama.

“I don’t know that there’s anybody who has been asked to do the variety of roles and responsibilities, and the way he’s handled it,” Spurs acting coach Johnson said. “It’s a lot for a rookie, and he’s embraced everything we’ve thrown at him.”

Castle’s selection made the Spurs the fifth team in history to boast back-to-back Rookie of the Year winners, and the first since Minnesota’s Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns accomplished that in 2015 and 2016.

Bob McAdoo and Ernie DiGregorio won consecutive Rookie of the Year honors for the Buffalo Braves in 1973 and 1974. Portland’s Geoff Petrie and Sidney Wicks did it in 1971 and 1972, while Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld put the Baltimore Bullets on the list in 1969-1970.

Speaking from his own experience, Wembanyama painted Castle’s Rookie of the Year triumph as a team award.

“It’s never one man’s job,” Wembanyama said. “I’m really proud of my teammates for giving him the chance to do that – being good teammates, creating a good environment. Just like the organization and my teammates and the staff did for me last year, they did the same for Steph this year.”
