For the record, Spurs guard Devin Vassell does not get an NBA Rookie of the Year ballot.

It is not surprising how Vassell would cast his vote if he could, however.

Stephon Castle.

“I feel like he’s definitely Rookie of the Year,” Vassell said of his 20-year-old Spurs teammate. “I’m biased, obviously, but I think that it is pretty easy.”

Even the purportedly unbiased appear to agree.

Heading down the home stretch of the season, Castle stands an excellent chance of giving the Spurs back-to-back Rookie of the Year winners.

The former Connecticut standout is unlikely to be the unanimous choice to hoist the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy, as Victor Wembanyama was a year ago. Still, Castle – the No. 4 pick in last summer’s draft – has emerged as the clear frontrunner of a crowded 2024-25 field.

“The thing about Castle is his athleticism, understanding how to play the game,” Dallas coach Jason Kidd said. “I definitely think he’s one of the top rookies in this league, if not the No. 1 rookie right now.”

Only four teams in NBA history have boasted a Rookie of the Year honoree in consecutive seasons.

Minnesota was the most recent, thanks to Andrew Wiggins (2015) and Karl-Anthony Towns (2016).

Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld gave the Baltimore Bullets successive winners in 1968 and 1969. Geoff Petrie and Sidney Wicks did it for Portland in 1971 and 1972, while Bob MacAdoo and Ernie DiGregorio accomplished that for the Buffalo Braves in 1973 and 1971.

A strong start to March has afforded Castle a chance to put the Spurs on the list.

The 6-foot-6 guard headed into Wednesday’s home game against Dallas averaging 22 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists in six games to open the month. Overall, he leads all eligible NBA rookies in scoring at 13.5 points per game.

Asked if he believes Castle to be Rookie of the Year worthy, Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson gave a quick and expected answer.

“Yes,” Johnson said.

Beyond sheer numbers and defensive prowess, Castle’s versatility has stood out to Johnson.

“He’s probably been asked the widest range of responsibility from his team in a decent-sized role,” Johnson said. “If you see all the different things he’s been asked to do – defense, offense, on the ball, off the ball, off the bench, as a starter – I don’t know if anybody has been asked to have such a wide range of roles. He’s ticked the box on all of them.”

Castle’s Rookie of the Year quest is aided by the fact he has no clear-cut competition this season. This year’s rookie class isn’t as top heavy as last season, when Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren would have been the obvious choice in a world in which Wembanyama did not exist.

Among rookies to have played in at least 20 games this season, only five are averaging in double figures scoring-wise.

Should Castle finish the season as the NBA’s Rookie of the Year, the details won’t matter.

This much is certain: He is already polling at 100% in the Spurs’ locker room.

“We all maybe had an expectation coming into the season, and he’s blowing that out of the water,” Vassell said. “I think we’re just getting to the beginning of what Steph can be.”

Here is a look at four players most likely to give Castle a run for his money in the Rookie of the Year chase:

1. Jaylen Wells, Memphis

Selected 39th overall out of Washington State, Wells has been a revelation for the Grizzlies, seizing a starting role and averaging 11 points. Wells’ scoring has tailed off to open March, reducing the guard’s chances at becoming the first second-round pick to win Rookie of the Year honors since Milwaukee’s Malcolm Brogdon in 2017.

2. Zaccharie Risacher, Atlanta

The versatile French forward began the Rookie of the Year race with the natural advantage of being the league’s No. 1 overall pick this season. Risacher has picked up production after a so-so start, and is now averaging 11.7 points.

3. Zach Edey, Memphis

The NBA’s tallest active player at 7-foot-4, Edey has been a rebounding force in Memphis. The former Purdue standout could find the path to Rookie of the Year votes arduous, however, if voters choose to split the Grizzlies on their ballots.

4. Kel’el Ware, Miami

A 7-footer selected 15th overall out of Indiana, Ware is the darkest of dark horses on this list. The Spurs know Ware well, however, as he scored a season-high 25 points against them in January.
