DALLAS, TEXAS - OCTOBER 24: Head coach Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs looks on while playing the Dallas Mavericks during the first quarter of the game at American Airlines Center on October 24, 2024 in Dallas, Texas.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich suffered a medical emergency at a local restaurant Tuesday night that required him to leave in an ambulance.
According to an incident report, the San Antonio Fire Department responded to a call of “an approximately 80-year-old patient” who had fainted at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.
The patient was transported to a local hospital with a non-life threatening illness or injury as a precaution.
A source with knowledge of the incident said Popovich is now at home, stable and recovering.
Popovich, 76, missed the majority of the Spurs’ recently completed season after suffering a stroke in November. In Popovich’s absence, assistant Mitch Johnson served as the team’s acting coach during a 34-48 campaign.
In a written statement released by the team in February in which Popovich declared himself out for the season, the Hall of Fame coach also indicated his desire to return to the bench in 2025-26.
“I’ve decided not to return to the sidelines this season,” Popovich said at the time. “Mitch Johnson and his staff have done a wonderful job and the resolve and professionalism the players have shown … has been outstanding. I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future.”
Popovich’s latest medical incident underscores the challenge the oldest and winningest coach in NBA history faces in his quest to return to the bench.
Team officials have maintained they are looking forward to having Popovich resume the job when he is ready.
In leading the Spurs to a record that matches the club’s best since 2018-19, the 38-year-old Johnson says he considered himself to be a placeholder until Popovich could return.
“This organization is still prioritizing Pop’s health and that time he will do what he needs to do,” Johnson said.
Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs’ franchise player, said he has faith in whatever tack the team’s coaching situation takes.
Wembanyama himself is recovering from a deep vein thrombosis diagnosis that ended his season prematurely in February.
“I trust the organization,” Wembanyama said. “I trust Pop to do all he can to come back, to get his energy back. And I also trust Mitch to grow into that role. So, I think we are in good hands. … I’m ready for anything and I know the organization will do good decisions.”
