San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich disagrees with a foul call on the Spurs during the second quarter against the Chicago Bulls at Frost Bank Center on Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, in San Antonio, Texas. The Bulls defeated the Spurs, 121-112.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is expected to miss the rest of the season, and it remains uncertain if the most-victorious and oldest NBA coach will return to the game after a mild stroke put him on medical leave in early November.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Saturday night that Popovich’s future as the Spurs mentor is “uncertain,” as the 76-year-old recovers from a stroke he suffered hours before the Spurs game against the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Frost Bank Center on Nov. 2. Popovich is expected to make a full recovery, but team officials could not say at the time if he would return to coaching.

Last month, Spurs Chief Executive Officer R.C. Buford said, “We expect him to be back,” adding that Popovich’s rehab program was going well.

Meanwhile, interim head coach Mitch Johnson has drawn praise across the NBA for holding the team together.

The Popovich revelation comes just days after the Spurs announced 21-year-old phenom center, Victor Wembanyama, is expected to miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder.

Popovich has coached the Spurs since the 1996-97 season, leading the team to five NBA championships. He has collected 1,390 regular-season victories and an additional 170 wins in the postseason.

The Spurs organization hasn’t commented on the latest report about Popovich’s return.
