PHOENIX – Day after day, game after game, Spurs forward Julian Champagnie has watched 39-year-old point guard Chris Paul show up for work, whether snow or sleet or aches or pains.
In seeing Paul take dead aim at playing a full 82-game season, Champagnie has come to know one thing about the 12-time All-Star.
“CP is crazy,” Champagnie said. “Just crazy.”
It is the type of crazy Champagnie hopes to emulate.
In addition to Paul and 32-year-old forward Harrison Barnes, Champagnie is the third Spurs player on track to appear in all 82 games this season.
He has two more left to accomplish that feat – Friday at Phoenix and Sunday’s regular-season finale at home against Toronto.
The quest hasn’t been easy for the 23-year-old Champagnie, either.
“A lot of treatment, a lot of mental relaxation, keeping your body right, keeping your mind right,” Champagnie said. “It’s a long season, a lot of ups and downs. You’ve got to be mentally prepared and physically prepared.”
Paul and Barnes have made a point of playing in as many games as possible in part because they are in or nearing the twilight of their careers. They want to make every minute count.
Champagnie, meanwhile, is still in the process of building his NBA career. He needs every game to do it.
Playing in his third season, Champagnie has emerged as a key rotation piece for the Spurs.
He appeared in 74 games last season, starting 59. With Devin Vassell beginning this season on the injured list while recovering from foot surgery, Champagnie started the first 27 games.
Once the Spurs’ roster was fully healthy, Champagnie moved to the bench.
He is averaging a career-best 9.7 points while connecting on a team-high 168 3-pointers. The number Champagnie savors the most, however, might be 82.
“I want to be durable,” he said. “I want to be here for the long haul. I want to win. Whatever I’ve got to do, I’m here for it.”
Barnes shows evolution as a 3-point shooter
When Wednesday’s game at Golden State came down to the final shot, it should have been no surprise Barnes was the one to take it.
Barnes is enjoying the best 3-point season of his 12-year career, making them at a team-best 43.8-percent clip.
The 154 3-pointers he had made are the second-most of his career.
“HB is a tough shot-maker, a great 3-point shooter,” Champagnie said after Barnes’ buzzer-beater downed the Warriors 114-111. “He’s shown he can make shots all year.”
Barnes did not necessarily begin his NBA life that way. He entered the league known more for his athleticism.
Barnes did not make more than 87 3-pointers in any of his first five seasons with Golden State and Dallas. It was a poor shooting performance with the Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals that sparked Barnes’ transformation. He was 9 of 29 from 3-point range in that series, which Cleveland won in seven games.
“After that, I made it a point to each year come back being a better shooter,” Barnes said. “There’s been highlights and low points in that journey. It’s not always easy, but it’s something I’ve tried to do every year, come back a better 3-point shooter.”
Barnes has hit 25 of 42 3-point attempts in April, a scorching 59.5%. He finished Wednesday game 6 of 9 after going 6 of 8 the night before in a defeat at the Los Angeles Clippers.
That steadiness allowed the Spurs to trust him “1,000%” with the game-winner, Paul said.
“I’m definitely thankful to the coaching staff and my teammates just for having faith in me,” Barnes said.
Sochan running out of time to return
Starting forward Jeremy Sochan missed his sixth consecutive game Wednesday with lower back inflammation, an injury that stems from a hard fall he took on a dunk attempt in March 30 home loss against Golden State.
There initially been some optimism Sochan might return for on the second night of a back-to-back in San Francisco, but the team again opted to take a cautious approach with the 21-year-old.
“There’s been a few things he’s had and tried to play through it a little bit,” acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “It’s trending the right direction. It’s just something we don’t want to rush back, especially where we are right now. We want to make sure he’s feeling healthy and comfortable and confident.”
