SAN FRANCISCO – For 79 games, Harrison Barnes had been Mr. Even Keeled for the Spurs.
Never too high. Never too low. Often stone-faced.
In the locker room after the game, often decked out in spectacles, he carries a professorial air that the Spurs’ raucous roster of kids can not hope to equal.
Even after ripping out the Golden State Warriors’ hearts with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer Wednesday, Barnes tried to keep up with the facade.
It lasted about two seconds.
Barnes stayed expressionless as this game-winner rippled through the net to give the Spurs’ a 114-111 victory over the Warriors.
Then Stephon Castle leapt in the air to chest-bump him. Harrison Ingram practically strangled him from behind.
The celebration was on.
“These guys are nuts,” Barnes said later.
For the Spurs, long since eliminated from postseason contention, it was a season-making kind of victory.
For the Warriors, scrapping to try and make the Western Conference playoff bracket outright, it was a gut-punch of a loss.
“We just made it a little harder on ourselves,” Golden State’s Stephen Curry said.
Barnes, a former first-round pick and NBA champion with Golden State, had 20 points – none bigger than the tie-breaking, turnaround 3-pointer over Jimmy Butler that dropped as time expired.
That shot silenced a sellout crowd of 18,064 at the Chase Center and sparked a celebratory mosh pit on the Spurs’ sideline.

“I think our guys deserved that,” Spurs acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “For the year they’ve had, in Game 80, the way they fought for that, I believe they deserved that.”
Rookie Stephon Castle and Keldon Johnson scored 21 points apiece to lead the Spurs, with Johnson getting 10 of his during a back-and-forth fourth quarter.
The Spurs survived 30 points from Curry and 28 from Butler, who reached that total on eight field-goal tries. Butler was 16 of 17 from the foul line.
With one Hail Mary flick of his wrist, Barnes rendered all of that moot.
“There ain’t been a lot of bright spots all season long,” point guard Chris Paul said. “That was one of them.”
The Warriors came into the night in sixth place in the Western Conference standings, with designs on moving up to fourth. Instead, Golden State dropped to seventh and finds itself in danger of falling into the play-in tournament.
The Spurs have their own impetus over the final two games of the season.
“We may not be playing for the playoffs, but we’re definitely playing for what’s to come in the next coming years,” forward Julian Champagnie said. “Every game is important to us and what we’re playing for.”
Here are three takeaways from Wednesday’s thrilling victory, which improved the Spurs to 33-47:
1. Barnes rewarded Spurs’ faith
Five nights earlier, the Spurs had a chance for a walk-off win at home against Cleveland. They went to Barnes in that situation as well.
Barnes missed a short-runner in the paint, and the Cavaliers survived the Spurs’ upset bid 114-113. With the game on the line in San Francisco, Mitch Johnson did not hesitate to call Barnes’ number again.
“It’s always good to have the opportunity to try and make it right,” Barnes said.
The play was again designed to get Barnes moving toward the basket. Butler defended it so well, Barnes was left no option but a fadeaway 3-pointer.
The 32-year-old Barnes approached the moment Zen-like.

“The thing with a game-winning shot,” Barnes said, “is you’ve got to take the shot.”
When Barnes’ heave dropped through the net, the Spurs weren’t just celebrating a walk-off victory. They were celebrating redemption for one of their favorite veteran teammates.
“That guys deserved that moment,” Mitch Johnson said. “I’m glad he got it.”
2. Defense makes big difference vs. Warriors
Ten days earlier, the Warriors came to the Frost Bank Center and gave the Spurs a whipping for the ages.
Golden State’s dominant 148-106 triumph tied for the fifth-worth defeat in Spurs history.
So when the Warriors opened Wednesday’s rematch with an 11-0 lead, with the Spurs needing 4:19 to record their first points, it might have been easy for the visiting team to let go of the rope.
“I’m just really proud of the guys,” Mitch Johnson said. “We didn’t really blink. We never let it get too far away from us. It was always in striking distance.”
The Spurs bounced back to take a 55-51 lead into halftime, then found themselves behind again by 14 with a minute left in the third quarter.
Solid defense in the fourth quarter – and especially down the stretch, when the Spurs forced three Warriors turnovers in crunch time – put them in position for Barnes’ game-winner.
“We didn’t put our heads down,” Champagnie said. “We made some shots and H.B.’s heave and we got the dub. But I think what kept us in it was just that, us not putting our heads down.”
3. The Spurs have a habit of playing spoiler
In a way, the game was reminiscent of one from last April, when the Spurs defeated the defending NBA champion Denver Nuggets on Devonte’ Graham’s game-winning floater with 0.9 seconds to play.
That loss to a Spurs team on its way to 22 wins cost the Nuggets the top seed in the West, and ultimately derailed their title defense.
That came in the second-to-last game of last season. The Spurs hijacked the Warriors this season in the third-to-last game.
“We’ve been saying it for 80 games,” Mitch Johnson said. “Our standard is the standard. We haven’t skipped steps. We are focused on getting better every opportunity we have. Those guys have lived that.”
Barnes’ walk-off buzzer-beater was the first for the Spurs since January 2019, when Rudy Gay’s last-second jumper beat Phoenix.
Before Wednesday, the Spurs’ last walk-off win on the road came in February of 2011, when Antonio McDyess’ tip-in stunned the Los Angeles Lakers.
