San Antonio Spurs v Los Angeles Clippers

The Spurs couldn’t defeat a playoff team on the road, but it was interesting for a while

The short-handed Spurs are getting good at playing competitively against teams that are contenders, but there always seems to be a stretch somewhere in the game where the Silver and Black can lose their way, and that bad stretch can be the difference between winning and losing. That stretch happened tonight in the minutes after the team came out of the locker room after halftime, when a two point halftime deficit turned into 17 in the blink of a eye. I mean, if you blinked really slowly, like a cat that’s half asleep.

Ivaca Zubac had a 24 point-20 rebound game and dominated the paint against the Spurs’ undersized bigs, especially after Biyombo picked up four fouls in the first half and was replaced by Sandro Mamukelashvili who couldn’t defend Zubac, but provided some wow factor on offense. Harrison Barnes had a nice game with hitting three point shots, and Castle continued to expand his game by getting to the free throw line and hitting them at a high rate. The Spurs garbage time team made the final score interesting as they closed out on a Silver and Black run as the Clippers won 122-117 on a game that wasn’t really that close.

Observations

  • Tonight’s article is my last recap of the 2024-2025 season for Pounding the Rock, and as always, whether or not I come back next season is dependent on whether I decide to do it again and whether they’ll take me back. I love writing for PTR, but it’s not always easy to put aside the time to get everything done. My hope is that my enthusiasm for the mission will be rejuvenated by next fall, but I have to tell you, readers, that this season has been tough to get through. Next year with a healthy Victor could be much more hopeful, though. I might be talking myself into it … again.
  • Keldon Johnson setting the Spurs record for points in a season off the bench is a big deal. Any time you pass up Manu Ginobili, you’re doing something right.
  • I really thought Chris Paul’s main role this year was going to be as a mentor for the young players. But the thing is that he can still play, and when he gets isolated on a big like Zubac, it’s a torture chamber for the big guy.
  • The Spurs defense hasn’t been great since the All Star Break, but they had a couple of nice possessions early where they forced 24 second violations. Unfortunately for the Spurs, they returned the favor later in the quarter. Three 24 second violations in a quarter seems like it should be some kind of record.
  • I kind of forgot that Ben Simmons was still in the league. Maybe the Clippers is where he belongs, on the Island of Misfit Toys.
  • After a back-and-forth first quarter, the Clippers led 28-26.
  • When Sandro Mamukelashvili is your backup center, you have a roster problem. I love Mamu, but he can’t be the only big on the floor.
  • At the half, the Clippers led 54-52, with both teams scoring 26 in the second quarter. Part way through the quarter, it looked like the Spurs were going to get some breathing room, but untimely turnovers let the Clippers get back in the mix.
  • The Western Conference is crazy competitive, because with just a few games to go, the difference between third place and eighth is two games. Imagine thinking you could have a home playoff series and then ending up in the play-in, and maybe missing the playoff altogether if you have an off game or two.
  • An 11-0 start in the third quarter by the Clippers put the Spurs in a 13 point hole as they looked lost coming out of the locker room. The Clippers defense had them discombobulated to the point of chaotic disintegration as the Clippers took control and the lead ballooned to 17. Barnes staunched the bleeding a bit with a breakaway dunk on a Vassell steal as the Spurs cut the lead to 11. Castle came alive in late in the quarter but Zubac dominated in the paint as the Clippers led 91-78 with a quarter to play.
  • Steph Castle is putting together a highlight reel of incredible dunks and almost-dunks. He’s also doing a great job with drawing fouls and getting to the line.
  • The Spurs challenge guy is on fire recently after a terrible start to the season.
  • The Spurs scored 26 points in each of the first three quarters. That’s neat, but not great when the opponent is scoring more.
  • The Miller beer commercial narrated by Christopher Walken almost makes me want to drink a Lite. Almost.
  • The Spurs didn’t give up late, as guys like Blake Wesley, Jordan McLaughlin, and Malaki Branham stepped up by hitting shots and they kept the margin respectable, but they couldn’t get enough stops to catch up as they lost by 5 after a little bit of garbage time stat stuffing.

The Spurs play again tomorrow night in another late night contest against the Warriors in San Francisco. It’s on KENS5, so it could be an adventure finding the game on TV if you’re not in the San Antonio area. Just three more games left, at the Warriors on Wednesday, Suns on Friday, and the final game at home against the Raptors on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 PM. And then no more Spurs until November.
