San Antonio vs Golden State, Final Score: Spurs play spoiler to the Warriors and win 114-111
The Spurs hung tough after a slow start and made the key plays down the stretch as Harrison Barnes sealed the win with a three point shot as time ran out.
The Warriors are one of the top teams in the league with a Hall of Fame superstar in Steph Curry, and tonight was a game they needed to win. The Spurs are missing their top two players and have been eliminated from the postseason for a while, but they are still playing for each other and the team, and tonight they played the spoiler and scrambled the Western Conference standings. Golden State needed a win to avoid the play-in and the possibility of an early exit, but the Spurs put together a win with a tremendous effort from Harrison Barnes and Keldon Johnson off the bench. Steph Curry did his best to keep the Spurs at bay but the good guys made the clutch plays down the stretch, capped by a tremendous game-ending shot from Harrison Barnes as time ran out for a 114-111 Spurs win.
Observations
- Well, this is embarrassing: I told you last night that I’d written my last recap of the season. But due to calendar trouble, akin to when Elmer Fudd could not tell if it was duck or ‘wabbit’ season, I was wrong. My personal calendar had me covering that game, but the real calendar had Mateo Mayorga on the game, so PTR had two quick recaps last night. Bonus content, if you will. That was completely my fault and my error. Tonight will really be my last recap of the season. I already spilled my guts about how I felt about this season, so I’m not going to repeat that. It worked out OK for me, because tonight was maybe the most exciting game to watch of the season, and it’s always more fun to write these after a win.
- Jacob Tobey’s pink blazer is pretty distinctive, I don’t think Bill Land could have pulled off that look.
- The Spurs did not score in the first 4 and a half minutes as the Warriors rushed out to an 11-0 lead. The Spurs scored the next 8, but the Warriors led 32-23 at the end of the first after the teams traded streaks.
- Castle is just a rookie, but he’s already the best available player on the team with Wembanyama and Fox out for the season. Barnes and Paul are great vets, but they just don’t have the ability to make elite plays like Steph at this point in their careers. I can’t wait to see what Castle is going to do with a full roster next year.
- For some reason, the video and audio weren’t synchronized on the local broadcast, and it was weird hearing Jacob Tobey tell me whether or not a shot was good before it got to the net, like he was from the future.
- Don’t turn your back on Blake Wesley when he’s inbounding the ball. He’s going to bounce it off your back and make you look like a fool. Brandin Podziemski learned that lesson the hard way in the second quarter.
- The Spurs retook the lead early in the second quarter as the Warriors’ intensity sagged. A Chris Paul triple put the Spurs ahead by three, a lead they extended to 9 as they went on an extended 24-3 run that pushed their lead to 8. The Spurs led 55-51 following a Castle dunk at the half.
- The Warriors regained the lead early in the third as Moses Moody went down the lane unheeded for a spectacular dunk as the Spurs once again came out of the locker room flat after halftime. In no time, the Spurs’ 4-point lead became a 9-point deficit. San Antonio’s effort improved as the quarter went on, but the execution faltered as the Warriors hit more shots and led 88-76 with a quarter to play with Curry doing much of the damage.
- Sean Elliot said that this year’s NBA season has been like five seasons, and with all that’s happened, he’s not wrong.
- The Silver and Black were hot to start the fourth and cut the lead with a 12-4 run to start the quarter, with Keldon Johnson getting loose in the paint. Maybe it was a little early to start throwing dirt on the Spurs’ grave as the Warriors only led by four with nine minutes to play. The good guys came all the way back with just under 5 minutes left as the score was tied at 99.
- Keldon Johnson had one of his best games of the season and put the Spurs in the lead on a slick assist from Steph Castle with 11 seconds left. Draymond tied it up with 3 seconds left, but then it was Barnes time, as he drained a three-point dagger for the win to seal San Antonio’s 114-111 win in San Francisco.
How do we create such great content here at PTR? Glad you asked:
I thought I might share a little bit about my writing process for these recaps:
- While I’m watching the game, I type out pretty much any thought that comes into my head.
- When I’m out of ideas, I go back and look at what I already typed out, and delete the boring points.
- I reorganize them to form a narrative — sort of — but keep at least one random thing in here to break things up and form a non sequitur. Maybe I’ll pepper in some pop culture references, too.
- I write a short paragraph to introduce this mish-mash of poorly written prose.
- Then, I do a light edit to fix grammar and reduce repetitive phrases.
- Afterward, it comes time to pick the goofiest looking picture from the feed of game photos.
- And lastly, remember to press SEND
It’s pretty simple, and sometimes it works out, and often it doesn’t, but it’s fun to do. I can’t believe that PTR lets me keep doing it, but apparently [some of the] readers enjoy it. Some day, I’ll do some more long-form stuff, but when you’re writing a story that’s going out within minutes of the game ending, it’s best not to overthink it.
Just two more games left, the Suns on Friday, and the final game at home against the Raptors on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 PM. And then no more Spurs until November.
