Castle wants more than just moral victories

Acting coach Mitch Johnson said he was “extremely proud” of the Spurs after they rebounded from a blowout loss at Detroit two days earlier and a 16-point second quarter deficit to hang tough with Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland on Thursday night before falling, 124-116.

“We did a really good job staying united and showing some fight and resilience,” Johnson said.

But for standout rookie Stephon Castle it wasn’t enough.

“At the end of the day, I still want a win, though,” Castle said. “We don’t really do moral victories, so it’s a tough loss. It’s a good team, but I feel like we gave ourselves a chance to win. We could have won.”

In a game that featured 15 lead changes and 14 ties, Castle finished with 22 points, a season-high 11 rebounds and eight assists to join Victor Wembanyama, Tim Duncan and David Robinson as the only rookies in franchise history to post a game of 20-plus points, 10-plus rebounds and five-plus assists. Wembanyama did it 11 times, Duncan six and Robinson three.

Castle also became the first rookie in the league this season to reach 1,000 points. He is just one of three rookies in Spurs history to have 1,000-plus points and 250 assists. The others were Wembanyama and Willie Anderson.

Only four other rookies in franchise history recorded 1,000-plus points: Anderson (1988-89), Robinson (1989-90), Duncan (1996-97) and Wembanyama (2023-24).

But Castle’s performance against the Cavaliers wasn’t without its warts. He shot an inefficient 9 of 24 from the field and 2 of 6 from the free throw line. He also had his floater blocked by Jarrett Allen in crunch time when the Spurs were down 114-112 with 2:35 left.

Allen’s block was part of a monster game by the All-Star center, who scored 19 of his season-high 29 points in the fourth quarter. He also finished with 16 rebounds and was 10 of 11 from the field.

Afterward, Johnson said he loved Castle’s aggressiveness but would like to see him not be “so adamant” at times trying to fight through bodies to attack the rim.

“I always love the aggressiveness,” Johnson said. “For him, just a young player, learning how to channel that and harness that aggressiveness and that relentlessness (is important). … They’re just learning moments for him.”

But even on a night he missed a lot of shots, Castle still notched his 21st game with 20-plus points.

“I guess he didn’t shoot great from the field today, but he still controlled the game and gave us a chance to win,” said Keldon Johnson, who had his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

“He kept us in the game at moments. It’s only up from here. I feel like he’s already a special talent, but I feel like the sky’s the limit for Steph. I feel like the game is already slowing down for him, but once he keeps growing - he works his ass off - he’s going to be great.”

Austin Spurs in playoffs

Mitch Johnson praised the job first-year Austin Spurs coach Scott King has done in guiding the G League team to its first playoff appearance since 2021.

The Austin Spurs (21-12) clinched a playoff berth with a 130-93 victory over the Memphis Hustle on Tuesday night in Southaven, Miss.

Rookie forward Harrison Ingram, who signed a two-way contract with the Spurs after they drafted him in the second round out of North Carolina last June, recorded a triple-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists against Memphis.

“He’s done a heck of a job,” Johnson said of King, who has faced a roster in a near constant state of flux due to injuries and other circumstances.

The Spurs hired King last August to coach Austin after he spent five seasons with New York. He was the assistant director of player development for the Knicks when he agreed to become the 10th head coach in Austin Spurs history.

“They’ve had about as inconsistent of a roster availability and set of circumstances almost as us, and they just have kind of stayed true and rode it all out,” Johnson said. “It’s a great testament to (King) and to their staff and to their roster, and I’m really happy for them. They’ll get a chance to play in the G League playoffs. I experienced it, and it’s a heck of an experience.”

Johnson was on Blake Ahearn’s staff as an assistant when the Austin Spurs won the 2018 G League championship.

Spurs ’ grueling schedule continues this weekend

The Spurs will face Boston on Saturday in what will be their fourth game in seven days and the first of a back-to-back that ends when they host Golden State on Sunday.

Despite the grueling schedule, Castle said he was grateful to get back on the floor so quickly after the tough loss to the Cavaliers.

“A break is always good but to be able to bounce back from a tough loss like this is definitely a luxury,” he said.
