3 takeaways as Spurs threaten East-leading Cavs before falling 124-116

CLEVELAND – The Spurs have missed Victor Wembanyama plenty since they ruled him out Feb. 20 for the rest of the season due to a blood clot in his right shoulder.
But never more so than in the fourth quarter of Thursday night’s 124-116 loss to Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland.
Jarrett Allen took advantage of the Spurs’ defensive shortcomings down low to score 19 of his season-high 29 points in the fourth quarter in a hard-fought game that featured 14 ties and 15 lead changes.
Without the NBA’s leading shot blocker protecting the rim for the Spurs, Allen finished with 10 of 11 from the floor and added 16 rebounds.
“He’s a really good player no matter what the matchups are, right?” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “He does a really good job of starring in his role and he sets great screens and he crashes the glass and he makes his free throws and he is just a very good, all-around mature player.”
Donovan Mitchell finished with 25 points and a career-high 14 assists for the Cavaliers (59-14). Three other players scored in double figures for Cleveland, including Max Strus with 18 points powered by four 3-pointers.
Spurs rookie Stephon Castle continued to state his case for Rookie of the Year, finishing with 22 points, a season-high 11 rebounds and eight assists. Devin Vassell had 22 points, and Keldon Johnson notched his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Spurs, who trailed by 16 in the second quarter, led 104-102 after Castle sank a 3 with 6:23 left, but Darius Garland answered with a 3 and Allen scored two straight inside buckets to give Cleveland a 109-104 advantage with 4:49 left.
The Spurs fought back to tie game 112-112 on a pair of free throws by Keldon Johnson with 3:05 remaining, but Allen took over from there, with his old-fashioned three-point play on an assist from Mitchell putting the Cavaliers ahead, 117-112. Garland iced the game with 3-pointer with 1:16 left.
Falling to 31-41, the Spurs are a loss away from clinching their seventh consecutive losing season. But Johnson said he was “extremely proud” of the way the team bounced back from a 34-point loss in Detroit on Tuesday night and a 16-point deficit in the first half Thursday.
“We did a really good job staying united and showing some fight and resilience,” Mitch Johnson said.
Here are three takeaways from the last game of the Spurs 1-2 road trip, which left them with an overall mark of 12-24 in games away from the Frost Bank Center:
1. Castle wants wins, not moral victories.
The fourth overall pick wasn’t buying the notion that the Spurs should be proud of the way they competed against the title-contending Cavs.
“At the end of the day, I still want a win, though,” Castle said. “We don’t really do moral victories, so it’s a tough loss. It’s a good team, but I feel like we gave ourselves a chance to win. We could have won.”
Castle become just the fourth rookie in franchise history with a game of 20-plus points, 10-plus rebounds and five-plus assists. The others are Wembanyama (11), Tim Duncan (six) and David Robinson (three).
Castle also became the first NBA rookie this season to reach 1,000 points. He is just one of three rookies in Spurs history to have 1,000-plus points and 250 assists. The others were Wembanyama and Willie Anderson.
Only four other rookie in franchise history recorded 1,000-plus points: Anderson (1988-89), Robinson (1989-90), Duncan (1996-97) and Wembanyama (2023-24).
2, Spurs love the way Castle attacks the rim, but he needs to temper it at times.
Mitch Johnson said he loved Castle’s aggressiveness but would like to see him not be “so adamant” at times trying to fight through bodies to attack the rim.
Case in point: He challenged Allen at the rim with a floater with 2:35 left and the Cavs leading 114-112 only to have the All-Star swat it away
“I always love the aggressiveness,” the Spurs coach said. “For him, just a young player, learning how to channel that and harness that aggressiveness and that relentlessness (is important). … They’re just learning moments for him.”

There are other areas needing improvement. Castle was an inefficient 9 of 24 from the floor and was just 2 of 6 from the free-throw line. But even on a night he struggled with his stroke, he still notched his 21st game with 20-plus.
“I guess he didn’t shoot great from the field today, but he still controlled the game and gave us a chance to win,” Keldon Johnson said. “He kept us in the game at moments. It’s only up from here. I feel like he’s already a special talent, but I feel like the sky’s the limit for Steph. I feel like the game is already slowing down for him, but once he keeps growing - he works his ass off - he’s going to be great.”
3, Cleveland is a bona fide championship contender.
The Cavaliers hung on for the win even without All-Star forward Evan Mobley (rest) and sixth man Ty Jerome (knee). They also lost Tristan Thompson early in the fourth quarter after he was ejected for picking up a flagrant foul for hitting the Spurs’ Julian Champagnie with an elbow to the back of the head while chasing a rebound.
Still, Cleveland had plenty of firepower with Mitchell and so many other talented pieces, including Allen, who was 6 for 6 in the fourth quarter and added seven rebounds.
“That’s a really, really good team that we played tonight,” Keldon Johnson said. “Jarrett Allen’s a really, really good player. He is a All-Star and he’s a great talent. It’s already hard guarding players in NBA in general, but I feel like he’s one of the better big men in the league and he’s great at his craft.”
