Vassell continues to ‘impact winning’ with all-around play

TORONTO – Acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson pulled Devin Vassell aside for a quick chat just before the forward took the court for Friday’s game against Philadelphia.
“Just change the game tonight,” Johnson told Vassell. “Just affect winning. However it is, just do that.”
By the end of the contest, it was clear that Vassell took his coach’s message to heart.
Logging a team-high 37 minutes, Vassell finished with 20 points sparked by a 4-for-8 night from 3-point range, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals in the 128-120 win over the injury-depleted Sixers.
It was the latest all-around effort by the fifth-year pro. Over the last 12 games, he’s averaged 18.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.1 blocks while shooting 39.1% from 3-point territory on 7.7 attempts.
“There was a time we were talking about his shooting slump, or whatever you want to call it, and it overshadowed a lot of it,” Johnson said of Vassell doing a little bit of everything even as he suffered through a rough patch shooting-wise midway through the season.
“Now that he’s making shots and back to his normal self, he’s probably more aggressive,” Johnson said. “He’s been impacting winning and leaving his imprints on the game in a variety of ways now for a while. It’s been good to see.”
Guard Blake Wesley emphasized that Vassell has been outstanding defensively, a fact underscored by his three steals against the Sixers coming two days after he had a career-best four blocks in a win over New York.
"I think he’s really locking in on defense,” the defensive-minded Wesley said. “I’ve been talking to him at the free throw line (saying), ‘We got to get stops. He’s really buying into that.”
Vassell said it’s all part of his desire to excel as a two-way player.
“You can’t control makes and misses,” he said, “but you can control all the other stuff … (including) being a pest on the defensive end."
Sochan collects season high for points
Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan said his 23-point performance against Philadelphia reflected his go-with-the-flow, free-styling approach to performing on the offensive end.
“I’m not a player that’s going to get five isolations in a game and play that way,” he said. “My style is about being aggressive, being a two-way presence for the team, being the energy, the connector, and there’s going to be games like this. It’s about staying the course and just trusting my teammates, the coaches, everyone around me.”
In notching just his fourth 20-plus outing of the season and first since he had 21 in the 117-114 loss to the Knicks on Christmas Day in New York, Sochan hit 11 of 17 from the floor in 35 minutes. He also had a team-high nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end, and two assists.
Friday’s game marked the second in a row Sochan has started at center after Bismack Biyombo had started the previous 15.
Asked if Sochan would start for the remainder of the season, Johnson said, “Just based on our availability and just kind of the makeup of our roster and lineup, I think it’s fluid everywhere, not just with Jeremy.”
Wembanyama prioritizing health
Friday’s game marked the fifth in a row the Spurs have played without Victor Wembanyama cheering them on from the bench.
The Spurs ruled Wembanyama out for the rest of the season on Feb. 20 after he was diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder.
De’Aaron Fox, who underwent surgery to repair a tendon in his left pinkie Tuesday in Los Angeles, was in attendance Friday after also showing up to Thursday’s game.
Johnson said Wembanyama’s absence is due to the treatment plan outlined by the medical staff.
“There are times when they’re with us, there’s times when they’re not,” Johnson said of the two stars.
“That’s just prioritizing their health and what they need to do to continue to get ready for them to hit the ground running next year, which is still a long, methodical process,” Johnson added. "That’s a very layered plan that they have to follow and be meticulous with. So, everything’s going well. (Wembanyama) is just adhering to the plan at this point.”
The Spurs expect Wembanyama and Fox to be ready to go by the start of next season.
