3 takeaways as Stephon Castle assists Spurs’ win over 76ers
Jeremy Sochan (10) dunks against the 76ers in first half.San Antonio Spurs v Philadelphia 76ers on Friday, March 21,2025 at the Frost Bank Center.
Locked in a tight game in the fourth quarter Friday, Spurs guard Keldon Johnson picked off a pass and was off to the races.
Running step-for-step with him on a two-on-one fast break was Jeremy Sochan.
Sochan knew what was coming. So much so that he nearly botched the fast-break alley-oop in excitement.
“I knew straight away he was going to pass it,” Sochan said. “So I kind of jumped early.”
Sochan recovered to finish the tie-breaking dunk. Then it was Johnson’s turn to jump.
In giddy, unbridled, child-like celebration.
“He was going crazy,” Sochan said.
The pair contributed the signature moment of a 128-120 victory over Philadelphia at the Frost Bank Center that the Spurs made more difficult than it needed to be.
Sochan scored a season-high 23 points, with all 11 of his field goals coming in the paint. Rookie Stephon Castle had 17 points and a season-best 14 assists.
Devin Vassell chipped in 20 points and all kinds of other box score goodies, while Chris Paul knocked down six 3-pointers on his way to 18 points.
It took all of that for the Spurs to beat back a skeleton 76ers squad with five All-Star players on the inactive list (Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey, Kyle Lowry and Andre Drummond).
The Spurs were not about to nitpick their first winning streak since beating the L.A. Clippers on Dec. 31 and Denver on Jan. 3.
“We won two games in a row,” acting coach Mitch Johnson said. “We haven’t done that in a long time.”
Quentin Grimes had 25 points and 10 assists, one of four Sixers players to score at least 20 along with Justin Edwards (25), Guerschon Yubasele (23) and Ricky Council IV (20).
That collection of unfamiliar names helped the Sixers transform a 16-point deficit into a 112-104 lead with 7:06 to play.
Thanks to a hibernating Spurs defense that got off the mat, Philly managed only eight points from there on the way to its 17th loss in the past 21 games.
“That was just us locking in on the defensive end,” Vassell said. “Being ultra aggressive, just being disruptive.”
Johnson made the game-turning play with 3:16 left, when he intercepted Grimes’ errant pass and ignited a fast break.
Sochan’s dunk gave the Spurs a 119-117 lead, and they never trailed again.
“We came together as players away from the coaches and said, ‘We’ve got to lock in on defense,’ ” Castle said. “We were kind of getting what we wanted offensively, but we just needed to guard and group rebound. So once we got them off the offensive glass and got their main guys kind of uncomfortable and off the ball, we started to pull away.”
Here are three takeaways from Friday’s win, which improved the Spurs’ record to 30-39 and ensured the club’s first 30-win season since 2021-22:
1. Is the Rookie of the Year case closed?
Afforded ample opportunity after De’Aaron Fox shut it down for the season, Castle continues to run away with the Rookie of the Year race.
The 14 assists he posted Friday were the most by a rookie in the NBA this season. They were tied for second-most in Spurs history for a rookie, trailing only 19 by Johnny Moore in 1981.
They were the most for a Spurs rookie since Alvin Roberston also had a 14-assist game in 1984.

Castle doesn’t recall having another 14-assist performance in his life at any level.
“It was just fun to play, just playing free,” Castle said. “I feel like that just came from really learning my teammates all season, just really putting it all together.”
Combined with 17 points and three steals, plus everything else Castle has accomplished in March, and the rest of the season could be mere formality as far as the Wilt Chamberlain trophy is concerned.
“Has it been a question?” Sochan said. “There’s no one out there on the ladder or even in his class that should get it. I think it’s his for sure.”
2. Vassell answers the call
Before Devin Vassell re-entered the game in the first half, Mitch Johnson hit him with one last-minute bit of instruction.
“Affect winning,” Vassell says Johnson told him. “However that is.”
Vassell will get credit for his fourth 20-point game in the past seven outings. It was the rest of his box score that stood out: three steals, five rebounds and seven assists. That comes a game after recording a career-high four blocks against New York.
San Antonio Spurs Devin Vassell (24) steals the ball from Philadelphia 76ers Guerschon Yabusele (28). San Antonio Spurs v Philadelphia 76ers on Friday, March 21,2025 at the Frost Bank Center.
“I think he’s really locking in on defense,” guard Blake Wesley said. “I’ve been talking to him at the free throw line (saying), ‘We got to get stops,’ ” Wesley said. “He’s really buying into that.”
More and more lately, Vassell is getting the message.
“You can’t control makes and misses,” Vassell said, “but you can control all the other stuff.”
3. Yabusele would look great in silver and black
In an otherwise snakebitten season for the 76ers, Yabusele has been a revelation.
Following a breakout run with Team France at last summer’s Olympics, the 6-foot-8 Yabusele signed a one-year, $2.09 million deal with Philadelphia.
He has given the 76ers quite a return on investment, averaging 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. The Spurs struggled to contain the burly power forward Wednesday, when he put up his most points since January by pummeling the paint.
“It’s one thing to be big,” Mitch Johnson said. “He really understands angles and how to use his body, whether it’s screens, on defense or in the post. It does make you think, how do you want to guard it?”
Yabuesele will become a free agent again this summer. The Spurs are famously in need of some added girth and grit in the front court. Yabusele has a relationship with Victor Wembanyama from his team on the French national team.
Seems like a player the Spurs ought to target in free agency.
