Why Spurs fans should get their De’Aaron Fox fix while they can

San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) is introduced as a starter before playing the Dallas Mavericks in an NBA game at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

Wednesday against Dallas, he came a rebound shy of his second career triple double.

De’Aaron Fox didn’t ask for much.

He didn’t need the game ball in the aftermath of his best night in a Spurs uniform Wednesday. He did not want a pat on the back.

Fox would have enjoyed a proper high-five for his handiwork, but even that proved impossible.

What Fox wanted most of all after going for 32 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in a 126-116 victory over Dallas was something the rest of his Spurs teammates take for granted.

“Obviously,” Fox said, “I would love to have all five of my fingers.”

For the former Sacramento star traded to the Spurs last month, that hasn’t been an option for months.

It could be soon.

Having played throughout the season with a torn ligament in his left pinkie, Fox is due to see a specialist in Los Angeles next week when the Spurs face a rescheduled game against the Lakers on St. Patrick’s Day.

Nothing is guaranteed, but it is possible the left-handed Fox will undergo season-ending surgery before the team returns from Southern California.

Which means fans hoping to gain their Fox fix at the Frost Bank Center ought to do so while they can – beginning (and possibly ending) with a home back-to-back Friday and Saturday against Charlotte and New Orleans.

“It will get fixed soon enough,” Fox said.

For Fox and the Spurs, things have not gone completely to script since the Feb. 3 blockbuster that brought the one-time All-Star to the Alamo City to pair with superstar Victor Wembanyama.

The lightning-bug guard was supposed to spend the final two months of the season getting to know his new extraterrestrial tag-team partner, while the Spurs had designs on fast-forwarding a run toward a Western Conference play-in bid.

The Spurs were forced to press pause on those plans when Wembanyama came out of the All-Star break diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, a blood clot issue that will sideline him for the remainder of his second NBA campaign.

In Wembanyama’s absence, Fox has done his best to acclimate himself to his new digs anyhow. The process has gone “as well as we could hope for,” acting coach Mitch Johnson said.

Following a 126-116 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) does a post-game interview with Spurs arena host Chuck Cureau at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. Fox had 32 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds to help the Spurs secure a win over the injury-depleted Mavericks.

“The guy (Fox) was thinking he was coming to play with goes out,” Johnson said. “There’s been a lot of things that have happened. He’s done nothing but show up every day and play through his own things. He’s been an absolute pro.”

The early returns upon Fox’s arrival were promising.

He posted 24 points and 13 assists in his Spurs debut, a 126-125 win in Atlanta on Feb. 5. Two nights later, Fox nearly hit a game-winner in Charlotte, swishing a clutch 3-pointer officials ruled came two tenths of a second after the final horn in a 117-116 loss to the Hornets.

He had 30 points in a victory over Washington.

Fox scored at least 22 points in three of the five games he played alongside Wembanyama. The Spurs went 2-3 in them, a mark that could have been better had they flipped a pair of one-point losses to the Hornets and Orlando Magic.

It was enough to whet the Spurs’ appetite for next season when Fox and Wembenamya are ostensibly running mates again.

“You can already tell he’s going to be special for this team,” forward Jeremy Sochan said. “The way he plays the speed, just the calmness as well with the speed, which you rarely see. I think he’s going to help a lot.”

The 27-year-old Fox has averaged 18.9 points in his first 16 games with the Spurs, shooting 44.3% overall and 27.3% from 3-point range – numbers below his career averages.

Even with Wembanyama in street clothes for the final months of the season, the Spurs hope Fox can continue to make progress in his transition to San Antonio.

Yes, things will look different for Fox when he is sharing the floor and the ball with Wembanyama again.

But maybe not that different.

“We’ve talked a lot about that in terms of our identity and style of play does not change,” Johnson said. “The people on the court, the particular lineups or groups that are on the court at a certain time, they’ll put their own spin. But the things that we ask of them, the things that we expect of them does not change no matter who’s on the court.”

With next week’s trip to Los Angeles approaching, the days in Fox’s season could be numbered.

His pinkie injury can be traced to the second day of fall camp with Sacramento, when he jammed his left little finger and damaged a ligament.

Fox has been playing with the pinkie taped to his ring finger since, careful to avoid using his injury as an excuse for poor shooting nights.

“I scored 60 with it and then I had 49 the next night with it,” Fox said, referring to back-to-back performances for the Kings against Minnesota and Utah in November. “So you try to just get through it.”

Wednesday against Dallas, Fox came a rebound shy of his second career triple double.

Even so, Fox acknowledges it would be better to eventually play NBA basketball again without a shooting hand jerry-rigged by MacGuyver.

The next step in that process comes next week in L.A. It could involve shutting Fox down for the season, a move his teammates say they will support if it happens.

“I want De’Aaron to make the decision that’s going to ultimately be best for him,” guard Devin Vassell said. “I want to make sure that he’s good, that he’s healthy. Because I know when he is healthy, he’s going to help this team tremendously.”

For Fox, full health won’t come until next season.

In the meantime, Fox will continue to put his best foot forward for the Spurs, if not his best hand.
