De’Aaron Fox’s first season with the Spurs is over after 17 games.
The 27-year-old guard will undergo surgery to repair the extensor tendon in his left pinkie finger and will miss the remainder of the season, the club announced Thursday.
The injury is a pre-existing one, which Fox suffered on the second day of training camp with Sacramento in the fall. He had been playing with the pinkie and ring finger on his shooting hand taped together throughout the season, including his stint with the Spurs after arriving in a Feb. 3 trade.
“Obviously I would love to have all five of my fingers, and not have one get in the way or not have to buddy tape them together,” Fox said after scoring 32 points with 11 assists and nine rebounds in Wednesday’s victory over Dallas. “But I mean it is what it is.”
It won’t be for long.
Surgery has long been the expected outcome of Fox’s injury. It is scheduled to be performed Tuesday in Los Angeles, with the guard expected to make a full recovery, the team said.
“It happened the second day of training camp, so at that point I’m like, I’ got to play,’ “ Fox said. “So like I said, it is what it is and it will get fixed soon enough.”
Fox averaged 19.7 points in 17 appearances with the Spurs. He finishes the season averaging 25 points and 45 games split between the Spurs and Kings.
The move comes with the Spurs sitting at 27-37 and in 12th place in the Western Conference. They are 4 1/2 games behind Dallas for 10th place and the conference’s final play-in bid.
With Fox now shelved, the Spurs will finish the season minus its top two scorers. Star center Victor Wembanyama having been shut down after the All-Star break due to a blood clot issue.
Fox’s teammates say they support his decision.
“I want De’Aaron to make the decision that’s going to ultimately be best for him,” Spurs guard Devin Vassell said. “I want to make sure that he’s good, that he’s healthy. Because I know when he is healthy, he’s going to help this team tremendously.
