Injured Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox aims to be ready for offseason
San Antonio Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox (4) watches a Spurs hype video before being introduced as a starter in an NBA game against the Dallas Mavericks at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Monday, March 10, 2025.
Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox survived nearly eight full NBA seasons without having to undergo any sort of significant surgery.
“I got LASIK if that counts,” Fox said.
The surgeon’s scalpel comes for most professional basketball players sooner or later. Fox’s first foray under the knife will come Tuesday in Los Angeles, when he is scheduled for surgery to repair a damaged tendon in his left thumb that has been bothering him since fall training camp in Sacramento.
The procedure will end Fox’s season 17 games after he joined the Spurs in a trade with the Kings last month. Fox has played with the injury throughout the season, and could have continued to do so.
With a 12-week recovery period ahead of him, Fox said he opted to take care of the issue now rather than wait until the summer so he could go through a full offseason with his new team and be certain to be cleared in time for fall camp.
“You want to be able to get a full off season in with the guys and be able to be on the court,” Fox said before Friday’s game against Charlotte, which he would eventually watch in street clothes. “That was really a big part of the decision making.”
A one-time NBA All-Star, the 27-year-old Fox adjusted well enough to his first month in San Antonio, averaging 19.7 points, 6.8 assists and 1.5 steals.
He finished his season on a soaring note, piling up 32 points, 11 assists and nine assists in Thursday’s 126-116 victory over Dallas. It marked the most points and rebounds he had collected in a Spurs uniform, and the second-most assists.
After the game, Fox informed teammates it would be his last until next season.
“Everybody was upset, because he was hooping,” forward Sandro Mamukelashvili said. “Hopefully the surgery goes good so he can recover fast. There are a lot of big games coming up later on next year so hopefully he will be ready to go.”
Fox suffered the injury on the second day training camp in September with Sacramento, when he jammed his pinkie and damaged the extensor tendon during a workout.
He played throughout the season with the pinkie and ring finger on his shooting hand taped together and averaged 23.5 points across 62 games.
Without the tape job, Fox cannot straighten his little finger. It rests at a 90-degree angle compared to the other digits on that hand.
“If I didn’t tape it, it’s just in the way,” Fox said. “Any time I try to catch the ball, it’s the first thing that gets hit.”
Fox shot 46.3% from the field and 31% from 3-point range this season, marks slightly below his career averages.
It is not difficult to believe shooting all season with a taped-up hand contributed to the dip.
“Obviously shooting he ball with four fingers is a tough thing to do,” Fox said.
“If it was my right hand, I think it would be fine,” Fox added. “I think I’d continue to try and play with it. But with it being my left hand, affecting the way I could dribble and shoot – all of that was a major reason that I really wanted to get it fixed.”
With Fox shelved, the Spurs are set to finish the season without their top two scorers. Star center Victor Wembanyama has been shut down since the All-Star break after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis.

Fifth-year guard Devin Vassell ranks as the Spurs’ leading remaining scorer at 15.9 points per game.
News of Fox’s season-ending surgery comes as the Spurs have not technically been eliminated from the Western Conference play-in race.
They entered Thursday in 12th place in the West at 27-37, 4 ½ games behind 10th-place Dallas for the final play-in spot.
In reality, the short-handed Spurs will head into the final month of the season in a situation similar to the past two years – out of any sort of postseason contention and monitoring draft lottery odds.
“I think everybody in here wants to win, obviously and continue to develop as a team and just try to find our niche,” Fox said.
That potential playoff run will likely have to wait until next season, better health permitting.
For now, Fox aims to be around for as many of the Spurs’ final 18 games as his recovery schedule would allow.
He has an inkling the surgery might not be the hardest part of the next three months.
“I hate watching,” Fox said. “I couldn’t be here every day and just not be able to get on the court and do stuff. As a competitor, that eats at you. That is another reason I’ve always played through whatever nicks and knacks that I’ve had.”
And as for the first real surgery of Fox’s life coming up next week?
“I’m a little nervous for it,” he said. “But I’m prepared.”
